Santi Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso Solane 2015

Member Review by zinfandel1:

Berry and red currant aroma. On the palate it was round and full of fruit with a burst of berry flavors and red currents along with some pepper. Low tannins and good acidity. A nice food wine.

Part of a mini France vs Italy tasting. This smells a little of caramel and chocolate brownie. It was fruit forward with hints of blueberries. Well balanced with good tannins and a dry end. For more on the tasting, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/06/france-vs-italy.html

Light cherry color, cherries and earth on the nose, red berries and licorice on palate. Very smooth, delightful wine.

Medium bodied airy, low acid, dry. Goes great with Italian food, salads!

Great wine for the price. A little jammy and acidic for my taste, but an aromatic spicy nose and a long finish more than make up for it. Great "interesting" wine, and an excellent value.

Nose is fruity and sweet. Heavily oaked with a long, somewhat bitter finish.

Notes: Cherry, spice and earth drive the 2014 Solane on the bouquet as well as the palate. The wine is medium in body, soft in the mouth and finishes clean and dry. This wine shows the elegant, drier style of Ripasso. Varietals: 70% Corvina 30% Rondinella Alcohol: >13%

Summary Santi Valpolicella Classico Superiore is a "ripasso" method Valpolicella; meaning that following primary fermentation the wine sees a second fermentation with the addition of Amarone grapes and skins, creating a richer, more complex and more exciting final wine. Terroir: Santi Solane is sourced from estate vineyards within the original Valpolicella appellation of Valpolicella Classico. Vinification: When primary fermentation is complete in early winter, grapes, skins and pomace from Santi's Amarone are added to the vats. The additional sugars from the Amarone trigger a second fermentation which adds additional layers of complexity, rich fruit and structure. The wine is blended and then aged for more 3-5 months in small oak cask followed by an additional 12 months in larger neutral casks prior to bottling. - Winery

Light- to medium-bodied, with taut tannins and subtle notes of wild herb, dried tea rose, ground spice, damson plum, smoke and salumi. Fresh finish. Drink now through 2018.

This offers scents of black fruit, prune and underbrush, followed by blackberry, raisin and chocolate flavors. It doesn’t have much complexity, but the simple and straightforward style is enjoyable.

The 2011 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore Solane is a 70-30 blend of Corvina and Rondinella. This well-priced Italian red would pair nicely with sausage pizza or pasta thanks to its dark consistency and subtle sweetness. A point of refreshing acidity keeps the palate refreshed. Drink 2014–2017.

Dry and tangy, showing a sweet, smoky base note to flavors of sun-dried cherry, cranberry and strawberry fruit, with notes of dried mint and spice and a lightly chewy finish. Drink now through 2016.
