From the very beginning, he introduced fine French varieties, winemakers and the most advanced winemaking techniques. From the end of the XIX century until the mid 70´s, Santa Rita developed under the ownership of Mr. Vicente García - Huidobro, father of the famous Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro Fernández. In 1980, the Grupo Claro acquired the Santa Rita property, giving a strong impulse to the enterprise in all of its scope, introducing great technological improvements and wine elaboration techniques unknown in Chile at that time. At the end of the 80´s a great expansion period for Santa Rita starts, sustained by the great momentum experienced by its exports and the excellent reputation acquired by its products, which obtained important awards and worldwide recognition. Earthy scent. Dry, tangy and a bit powdery.

Not sure about this wine. I tried it the first glass on one day and liked it. Then the next night (sealed as I normally do with my wine) and it was a totally different wine - not in a good way. I have a second bottle to try again but with so many other good buys out there I am not inclined to put this on the to buy again list. And had the second bottle that I had in the cellar this past weekend (8/29) and my impression did not improve at all on this. Oh well they can not all be good bottles.

It tasted ok after a few minutes of breathing, but smelled pretty bad (to me, at least). I probably won't buy this again.

120 Merlot 2009 - Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast/ A touch medicinal to start, then with airing you get some faux oak, vanilla and cream. The palate has a mild scratchiness and grate to it, but it’s by no mean harsh and the flavors of berry and cherry are pretty good. A little high in acidity and low in volume, but for an $8 wine that’s to be expected.

Heritage and enterprise are hallmarks of Santa Rita, one of Chile’s premier wine estates. Founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernandez in Chile’s Maipo Valley, this historic property was among the first to pioneer plantings of European grape varieties in Chile. In 1980, it was acquired by its present owner, Ricardo Claro, under whom Santa Rita has reaped the rewards of continuous investment, resulting in a period of impressive growth, during which the winery has consolidated its position in the vanguard of Chile’s most successful and innovative estates. Santa Rita’s internationally popular, best-selling “120” Series of varietal wines recalls the heroes of a pivotal event in Chile’s successful 19th century struggle to overthrow Spanish rule. History relates that in the early 1800s Doña Paula Jaraquemada, then proprietor of the Santa Rita manor house and estate near the Chilean capital of Santiago, famously gave refuge in the cellars of her property to 120 Chilean patriots. When a brigade of Spanish soldiers arrived at the expansive one-story ranch house in search the band of rebels, the feisty matriarch stated she would rather see the Spanish burn the property to the ground, with her inside, then let them step foot within her family home. Thus it was that band of 120 men lived on to fight another day, and the dwelling, now site of Santa Rita’s highly acclaimed Doña Paula Restaurant, occupies a unique place in Chilean national history. Production Area Central Valley, Chile. Grape Varieties 100% Merlot. Vinification The grapes undergo a pre-fermentation cold maceration, followed by fermentation at 68-77°F and a post-fermentation maceration. After racking, 90% is kept in stainless steel vats while 10% undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine is then blended and bottled. The grapes were hand picked during the month of April. They were destemmed, crushed, and ermented at 24°-26 °C (75°-79 °F), depending on the lot and zone of origin. 10% oak was used during fermentation to help set the color and stabilize the wines. Once the alcoholic fermentation was completed, 20% of the wine was aged in French oak for 6-8 months to lend sweetness and increase complexity. Color Deep red with ruby hues. Bouquet Fresh strawberry, plum and vanilla scents, complemented by a hint of dried herbs. Taste Well-rounded, fruity flavor, enhanced by soft tannins and a pleasant note of spicy oak. Alcohol 14% Serving Suggestions Ideal match with burgers, pizza, pastas and mild cheeses.

120 Merlot 2006 - 86 Points & Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast/ Still a sure-fire Best Buy in these days of inflation, yet in its own right this is pretty good Merlot. It's full-bodied and hints at smoked meat, leather and black fruit. The nose is solid and so is the palate.

Vivid red color, brilliant, with violet hints, of medium intensity. Ripe red fruits combine with fine herbs in a young and fruity aroma. To the palate it is a medium lightly bodied wine showing fruity

/ A controlled mix of rubber, berry, olive and leather gives this bargain hunter's wine a legitimate bouquet. The palate is herbal but also full of red fruits like currants, raspberry and plum, while the finish is mostly clean and sound. A solid wine for the price.

120 Merlot 2007 - Examiner.com/ ...while the same price as the Cabernet, gives you more value for your money. The bouquet on the Merlot is fantastic. Bury your nose in the glass and enjoy the leather, mixed berries and olive. The palate is true and continues the flavors of berries and lots of dark fruits. It also features a very lengthy finish for the price.
