Santa Rita Medalla Real Gran Reserva Cabernet Chile 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Ripe red and black fruit aromas mingle with leather and spice, exquisitely balanced by wood notes evoking vanilla and toast. Supple tannins and a majestic structure conclude in a complex and persistent finish. Delicious with steaks, wild game, hearty stews, casseroles and ripe, semi-creamy cheeses.

From the very beginning, he introduced fine French varieties, winemakers and the most advanced winemaking techniques. From the end of the XIX century until the mid 70´s, Santa Rita developed under the ownership of Mr. Vicente García - Huidobro, father of the famous Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro Fernández. In 1980, the Grupo Claro acquired the Santa Rita property, giving a strong impulse to the enterprise in all of its scope, introducing great technological improvements and wine elaboration techniques unknown in Chile at that time. At the end of the 80´s a great expansion period for Santa Rita starts, sustained by the great momentum experienced by its exports and the excellent reputation acquired by its products, which obtained important awards and worldwide recognition. A profound Cabernet from Santa Rita's home vineyard in Alto Jahuel. The hue is dark and opaque, while the nose is deep and earthy, but also intensely fruity. Shows fine structure and a lot of black cherry and cassis. Grabby, tight and ageable through at least 2013. The real deal in affordable Chilean higher-end CS; offers a little of everything, from spice to herbs to olive to fine fruit. - M.S. Very solid for the vintage, with crushed plum, fig and black current fruit nicely woven with maduro tobacco and bittersweet cocoa notes. Theres a loam edge on the finish, but this stays solidly fleshy through the end. Drink now through 2013. 73,300 cases made. -JM Grapes for Santa Rita's Medalla Real wines are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from the estates best and oldest vines. Intense fruit and a judicious use of French oak in the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay result in complex and concentrated wines that are simultaneously elegant and classical in style. ...

The Medalla Real wines are Santa Rita's way of highlighting the superior micro-climates of Chile. Maipo Valley in an ideal setting for Cabernet Sauvignon and in fact the grapes for this wine come from their single Alto Jahuel vineyard. Mature vines and naturally low yields make the fruit concentrated and complex. The blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Cabernet Franc and is aged 14 months in a mix of new and 2nd and 3rd use oak barrels. The Wine Spectator scored this great value Cab 90 points saying "Very solid for the vintage, with crushed plum, fig and black current fruit nicely woven with maduro tobacco and bittersweet cocoa notes. There's a loam edge on the finish, but this stays solidly fleshy through the end. Drink now through 2013."
