Food Pairings for Santa Maria la Palma Cannonau di Sardegna le Bombarde
OK, I HATED this on first sip. It was overwhelmingly ferrous, with some gaminess to boot. I left it alone in the glass for 15 minutes or so, then sipped it and the iron tang had gone, replaced by meat and leather. 15 minutes later, the meat and leather had melded with a strong, kirsch flavor. In the end it was very much like an old style C9DP, with all the rusticity and funkiness left in. Great varietal typicity for not much money, but may not appeal to New World Grenache fans. MUCH better with food than without, we had it with BLTs and it was very good with the smoky meat.
Colour: Lively, bright ruby red. Aroma: Intense and highly polished, with stylishly characteristic aromas. Palate: dry, rounded, warm and velvety but also vigorous and very harmonious, with a highly typical finish and just the right tannic content.
