Santa Ema Reserve Merlot 2007
Deep violet-ruby-red color. Very fruity wine with aromas of plums, blackberries, and black currant, accompanied by intense notes of caramel, chocolate, and vanilla. The palate is soft, ripe tannins lend good structure and balance. Drink with red meats, white meats, pastas, game birds, and cheeses.
My Rating: 87. Nic nose with complex fruit aromas. Tight body with low sugar, almost to point of having a hint of bitter. Nice balance though. Price is very low at $8.99 at Costco
My Rating: 89. This wine is full bodies ,fruity with a strong taste of oak. it seems to need a little time in the bottle. Tannins are uneven. The nose is almost the same as the taste; oak berries and some complex melange but some how not very elegant .
Merlot never ceases to amaze me, it marries its terroir but keeps it charms. This one is an intriguing wine I found challenging to describe. Nose of creamy shredded vegetables, sweet compost, and "frosted fruit cookies". On the attack same frosted cookies and wood. In the mouth a smooth mix of chemical, spicy sweet peppers (like sauteed bell peppers, mild cumin, and mild sugar), and more fruit. Finish of fruit similar to the cookies.
a nice wine to enjoy with red meat. Perfect for wine drinkers like myself who appreciate the good taste but don't want to spend big dollars or track down the right French.

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate"The 2007 Merlot Reserve is a glass-coating opaque purple. The nose offers up coffee, mocha, and cherry leading to a wine with no hard edges and plenty of character. If all Merlots offered this much pleasure, Pinot Noir would never have become so popular." Deep violet-ruby-red, this Merlot is a very fruity wine with aromas of plums, blackberries, and black currant accompanied by intense notes of caramel, chocolate, and vanilla. It has soft, ripe tannins that lend good structure and balance on the palate.
Solid, with ripe plum and cassis flavors, backed by a layer of vanilla and mocha toast. Slightly firm, but with good weight and length. Drink now.
This relies more on its vanilla and blueberry aromas than its more modest core of plum and cherry fruit, with a toasty edge lingering on the finish. Drink now.
Cocoa/chocolate nuances; blackcurrant and cassis, smooth texture, some elegance, lengthy.
