Santa Duc Cotes du Rhone les Vieilles Vignes 2010

Member Review by Joe Ryan:

2006 vintage - highly enjoyable. excellent nose; it took me longer than usual to actually take a sip. medium-heavy body, silky, powerful fruit flavours and sweetness. very long, enjoyable decay leaving a mellow acidity. the best parts are the nose and the finish. if you like heavier, sweeter wines, this is a great, inexpensive wine to select from cotes du rhone. it tastes like it should cost a lot more!

Domaine Santa Duc is widely renowned for their amazingly lush Gigondas. Winemaker Yves Gras is one of the most talented in the region and his handling of these Southern Rhone varietals brings out their exotic intensity. From the outstanding 2009 vintage, this wine is sourced from four estate vineyards in different CDR Villages; Rasteaux, Seguret, Vacqueyras and Rouaix. The vineyards all boast old vine plantings averaging 40+ years of age. A very low yield blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, the lots are vinified separately and aged in tank and then bottled unfiltered to retain the intensity and nuance. Steve Tanzer and Wine Enthusiast Magazine both scored it 90 points. WE said "Full bodied and creamy in texture, this is a big, ripe wine, but it never goes over the edge into raisins. Black olives, leather and chocolate finish long, potent and dusty. Drink now–2016."
