Spicy, wild, and savory on the nose with oak is just a touch obvious, all topped with a light leafiness. In the mouth this is fabulously cool, crisp compact and focused offering lovely purity in the style of a village wine from Burgundy. While ethereal, there is lovely ripeness here, delicacy yes, but also fine balance. Just a simple, clean and fresh expression that delivers subtle raspberry fruit in an energetic package. Atypical but lovely. 89pts
A bit minty and spicy, with nice soil tones, a hint of tar and some spicy red fruit on the nose. The palate is round and fairly opulent with a smooth texture, nice ripe tannins, feeling just a bit modest early on before the meaty, spicy cherry fruit kicks in on the mid-palate accompanied by late-arriving inner mouth perfume al followed by a smooth, modest finish finish which shows just a hint of heat. 89pts
A little dark and musky, with great liquory black cherry fruit, a hint of cola and some well-integrated wood spice are presented with surprising freshness on the nose. This is taut and sinewy, almost muscular in the mouth. The tension here is very attractive. While this is a big wine, its bright, clear black raspberry and cherry fruit is well restrained by the fine tannins and supporting acids. There’s some wood spice on the back end that adds a really nice sweetening top note to the fruit, which takes a medicinal turn. That might be off putting to some, but the fruit comes back with excellent clarity and length on the long, slightly chewy yet fresh finish. This can stand some age. There is a little heat here, but there’s so much going on, including some lovely developing inner mouth perfumes, that I can handle the heat. 92pts
Brilliant nose - lots of black fruit, subtle oak notes, a touch of black pepper, some notes of evergreen. The mouth has a nicely approaching red fruit tartness, slight butteriness in the middle, satisfying finish.
a combo of light red cherry, blackberry, a little red pepper, with a kick on the end. delicate characteristics, this is a winner!
I do like this wine, but it is a bit bigger pinot for me- a bit too much dark fruit. The santa cruz mts AVA is producing some great pinot fruit, and some talented winemaking as well. I actually prefer Thomas Fogarty's Rapley Trail Block B pinot. It is more red fruit vs. black, and typifies the SCM region, IMHO.
