Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards Verdelho Alta Mesa Quinta Cruz Silvaspoons Vineyard 2008

Member Review by WineborkDotCom:

Quinta Cruz is a label used by Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard for its wines made from grapes associated with Spain and Portugal but grown in California. This Verdehlo (the grape used to make Madeira) is grown in the warm Alta Mesa region near Lodi. It's a flavorful and unusual wine. Attractive, piquant mix of fruits - especially apricot and grapefruit - along with caramel and spices vaguely similar to those in Gewurztraminer. Very full - it borders on being too heavy, especially as it warms up - and slightly sweet-feeling in the mouth, oily textured. Definitely needs to be served cold. Good with rich white sauces.

Since 1975, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard has been producing terroir-driven, food-oriented wines known for their character, personality and ability to age gracefully for decades. We are well-known for making Pinot Noir that is still alive and well in its third decade. In 2008 we launched a second brand, Quinta Cruz, which features all Iberian Peninsula varieties. These Portuguese and Spanish varieties include Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Graciano, and Tinto Cão. Our tasting room and winery is located in the City of Santa Cruz in an area where you can walk to many other tasting rooms nearby, many in the same building. We are only a few blocks from the beach and Natural Bridges State Park. Read less
