Planeta is a Journey through Sicily which begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Planeta’s Metodo Classico Brut Carricante is produced at Planeta’s fifth and most recently built winery, Feudo di Mezzo, in Castiglione di Sicilia, the heart of Etna viticulture. The location is spectacularly located in the path of a lava flow from a 1566 eruption. The volcanic stone “garden” is a beautiful setting for the winery where it blends into the interesting landscape. This is one of the most famous areas of Etna, a few meters away, and in between, Planeta’s vineyards, Sciara Nuova and Montelaguardia. Santa Cecilia is our benchmark wine produced from the most important indigenous Sicilian grape variety, Nero d’Avola. With its white soils and ancient vines, Noto is the ideal area for Nero d’Avola cultivation. The wine expresses elegance, power, and balance and reflect the unique aromas of Sicily. Production Area Noto, Sicily, Italy. Grape Varieties 100% Nero d’Avola. Vinification The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed; followed by 12 days of maceration on the skins in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is matured for 14 months in Allier oak casks. Color Reddish purple tending toward violet. Bouquet Aromas of red fruit such as plums and berries mingle with notes of citrus, carob, and licorice. Hints of graphite on the finish. Taste Elegant with compact tannins; fills the mouth with a balanced texture and a long distinctive finish. Think elegance, power & balance. Alcohol 14% Serving Suggestions Wonderful with red meat, mushroom based dishes, pastas with hearty sauces, and aged cheeses.
Santa Cecilia 2008 - 91 points, Wine Enthusiast/ Dark and brooding, Santa Cecilia opens with a medley of licorice, dark spice, blackberry, currant, almond and soft shadings of dusty minerals. The complexity is there and the mouthfeel is equally tight, tonic, firm and clean.
