What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

I loved this wine. It is so fruity as the label on the outside. For this price it is a real bargain. When I tasted the wine the first time I liked it so much that I bought a bottle and drank it with my girlfriend for Christmas.

Lots of light berries, some spices and it dos not need long to open up. Just drink and enjoy it.

The 2006 Sanford Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir is a blend from their estate vineyard, La Rinconada, and the historic Sanford and Benedict Vineyard next door. A mix of vineyard blocks and several different clones gives this wine added complexity. The wine is deep violet red in color and is bursting with raspberry, black cherry, pepper and clove on the nose. The palate delivers dusty berry flavors framed nicely by bright acidity and supple tannins. The wine was allowed to age in French Oak barrels (30% new oak) for 10 months where it gained concentration and picked up hints of vanilla and licorice.
