What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

This flagship wine showcases grapes from the Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada and El Jabali vineyards. The 2005 Sanford Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir is a blend from Sanford's estate vineyard, La Rinconada,and the historic Sanford and Benedict Vineyard next door. A mix of vineyard blocks and severaldifferent clones give this wine added complexity. The 2005 Sanford Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir is adeep violet red in color and bursts with Bing cherry, raspberry, pepper and clove aromas with aslight hint of vanilla and licorice. The palate delivers wild berry flavors framed nicely by brightacidity and supple tannins.

Great fruit in mid-palette and supple tannins, needs cellaring. Drink 2010-2012 if you can keep from drinking it!
