Sanford Chardonnay 2015

Member Review by VegasOenophile:

A green-tinged pale yellow in the glass. Initial aromas of chalk, white flowers, and fresh oak. Stony minerality eventually gives way to aromas of peach, golden apple, honey and some light melon notes. Pretty chrysanthemum and other flowers. On the palate, it's got brisk acidity. It's got a sweet, toasted marshmallow suggestion but isn't very woody. Rather like a white tea made with lower petals. There's a definite herbaceous quality. Some green herbs. The fruit is very slight and closed. Light flavors of tart apple. It rounds out nicely on the finish/aftertaste where it all comes together. I consider this a more Burgundian style. There's some light salinity throughout as well. I'd call this a "food chard." 85 pts. 7/31/12

The story and timeline of Sanford Winery and Vineyards parallels those of Santa Barbara wine country. In fact, Sanford was a pioneer in the Santa Rita Hills, planting the first Pinot Noir vines in a region now heralded for that varietal. That was 1971, and five years later, the winery released its first wine, startling critics with the quality of its inaugural release. With the 1976 vintage, Sanford gave the world its first taste of the great wines to come from the Santa Rita Hills. By 1981, Sanford had outgrown the converted hay barn that had served as its winery. It moved to larger, more modern facilities, previously operated by another producer. Sanford Winery has an uncomplicated approach, focusing on nurturing the fruit in the vineyard, and minimizing handling throughout the winemaking process. That philosophy guided a continual improvement in quality, all while production has gradually increased. In 1996, Sanford Winery found a vineyard site with soil qualities nearly identical to those in its Sanford & Benedict parcel, the site where it first planted Pinot. That year, it planted both Pinto Noir and Chardonnay at the La Rinconada vineyard. Two years later, Sanford Winery helped lead efforts to certify the Santa Rita Hills as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). In 2001, Santa Rita Hills became an AVA. That same year, Sanford opened a new, state-of-the art winery at the La Rinconada site. By 2002, Sanford Winery and Vineyards faced its next challenge: bringing its wines to a growing and more sophisticated market. To achieve that goal, the winery turned to Terlato Wines International, the leading marketer of luxury wines in the United States. Owned by the Terlato family - Anthony and his sons Bill and John - Terlato was the perfect partner for Sanford. Anthony Terlato brought 50 years of experience in the wine business, having succeeded in every aspect of the industry. He and his sons represented the finest wines from the world's most important regions. The Terlatos believed deeply in Sanford's wines and in its future, and they took an ownership interest in 2002. Since then, with Terlato's expertise as a driving force, Sanford Winery's reputation as a world-class producer has grown, and awareness of the Sanford brand has exploded. With the enormous success of Sideways, a 2004 Oscar winner, millions of filmgoers discovered Sanford along with the movie's lead characters, who made Sanford Winery their first stop on their Santa Barbara wine country tour. In 2005, the Terlato Family assumed a majority ownership interest in Sanford Winery, laying the groundwork for a future every bit as successful as its past. Read less

Vacuumed it from Tuesday and now on Friday, it's much better. More toasted nut and apple and oear fruit on the nose. Much more well rounded and integrated with more fruit on palate as well. Apparently this needs more time in bottle or breathing for an hour or more before drinking.

Tons of oak, almost too much but not quite. Some butter, good fruit backbone.

balanced oak, acidity, and fruit; medium bodied, definitely something that would pair well with a big fish or vegetable dish with cream sauces.

Very, very good chardonnay. Crisp with tropical fruit notes in both the aromas and the palate. Streak of minerality for interest. Touches of oak. Interesting and complex.

In 1971 Sanford Winery and Vineyards discovered an overlooked, grape-growing treasure in the Santa Rita Hills. Our 2010 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay comes exclusively from our two estate vineyards in heart of this cool climate appellation.

This 2010 Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from Sanford's two estate vineyards in heart of the cool climate Sta. Rita Hills appellation. La Rinconada Vineyard and Sanford & Benedict vineyard Chard combine to give this wine aromatic complexity and layers of flavor and richness. Hand harvested and barrel fermented this wine shows all of the bright citrus and pineapple aromas that make Santa Barbara Chardonnays so appealing. The 2008 scored 90 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine. They wrote "Made in the oaky-fruity style that makes some Chardonnays cloying, but saved by brisk acidity and a steely minerality that must come from chalk and rocks in the soil. The flavors are of pineapples and tangerines."

Lots of sweet, smoky oak on this wine, with flavors of pineapples, peaches, limes, vanilla and honey. Itrsquo;s balanced with crisp acidity. Drink now.

This produced intense, but elegant wines with great structure. This hand harvested, barrel fermented chardonnay shows intriguing aromas of citrus and lychee nut. In addition to the lovely fruit, this wine has complex characters of roasted nuts and minerality that carries through its long finish.

Sanford's estate vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills, La Rinconada and Sanford & Benedict, along with the El Camino Vineyard in Los Alamos and the famous Bien Nacido Vineyard.
