San Silvestro Barolo 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The “Cantine San Silvestro” is located in the territory of the Commune of Novello. It mainly produces the leading Piedmontese Doc and Docg red wines, with a storage capacity in a controlled microclimate of around 400,000 bottles within a total surface area of over 5,000 square metres. The grapes vinified by Cantine San Silvestro are mostly grown in the Langhe, and from vineyards to be found in the Roero and the Monferrato. Today, San Silvestro represents the continuation of a project begun by Giovanni Sartirano, and carried forward through four generations. Over the years the firm - run today by cousins Paolo and Guido Sartirano - has gradually expanded beyond the local market, and now the production of “Cantine San Silvestro” is sold throughout Italy and abroad. This is a very well structured red wine with good body and spicy notes which lead through to a dry finish. It pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, game, grilled and roast meats and mature cheeses.

Since 1988, the Tenuta Arnulfo Costa di Bussia estate in the area of Monforte d’Alba has also belonged to the Sartirano family, and in 2002 they also took over the Tenuta Ghercina estate, which includes vineyards in the villages of Barolo and Novello, where the headquarters of the company are now located. Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

The Sartirano family's wine business was founded in 1871, but it was only in the 1950's that they started to develop the domestic market outside Piemonte, selling their wines in 54L barrels. In 1970 the family decided to bottle its wines and installed its first bottling line. Business prospered and in 1976 a new winery was built and the company was renamed Cantina San Silvestro. Continuing this expansion, in 2001 the family purchased 8 hectares of land in the middle of the Barolo region where they have built a new 5,000 square metre winery with modern vinification and increased storage facilities. In the 1990's the export market soared and today export sales now account for 60% of San Silvestro's total production. San Silvestro produce great quality, classic and keenly priced Piemontese wines from their own grapes as well as working with long term contract growers from the Langhe area and other prime areas of Piemonte.
