San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

"Aromas of plum, dried meat, flower and figs. Full body, velvety and chewy tannins. So much fruit and intensity. I love the generous fruit and form to this wine. Drink in 2021." - James Suckling *(96 points)*"The Poggio San Polo 2013 Brunello di Montalcino offers bright and sweet cherry fruit that pops out with pretty intensity as soon as you lift the glass to your nose. This wine offers beautiful fruit definition and a snappy personality that sings loud and clear. So many Brunellos can taste flat and evolved, but this wine is jazzy and very lively instead. The wine is fermented in cement vats and later aged in large oak casks and tonneaux for two years. Some 50,000 bottles were made." - Wine Advocate *(93+ points)*"Woodland berry, forest floor, exotic spice and tobacco aromas escape the glass. It's bright and loaded with finesse, delivering crushed red cherry, juicy cranberry, cinnamon and clove framed in taut fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity lends exquisite balance while a star anise note closes the lingering finish. I love the classic vibe on this—it's the best offering I've had to date from this dynamic estate. Drink 2021–2038." - Wine Enthusiast *(96 points)*

The concept underpinning San Polo: to maximize the intrinsic potential of the terroir, make the quest for quality a priority and create an ethical and responsible context where man’s labours and the natural environment are integrated in a harmonious and constructive whole.   Our goal was to transform the San Polo Estate into a premium quality winery. The year 2007 marked the beginning of a new era for San Polo: a prestigious, historic appellation was accompanied by an entrepreneurial approach and openness to multiple business opportunities. Subsequently, the importance of an eco-friendly approach was understood and developed, leading to a steadfast commitment to sustainability, which is now the hallmark of the Estate and pervades and informs all its practices and operations.   San Polo is situated in Podernovi, on the southern slope of Montalcino. The valley is called Sant’ Antimo and there too, almost at touching distance, stands Mount Amiata. The locals call this area a ‘Mezzopane’, meaning that to admire the beautiful view is to ‘take one’s fill’, like food for the soul. The windows, knolls and vantage points of the Estate’s two farmhouses look out over the breath-taking Tuscan landscape of the Old Masters. And finally, San Polo’s modern and innovative wine-making cellar, so cutting-edge as to have become synonymous with the Company itself. Read less

Intensives, leuchtendes Rubinrot. In der Nase Noten nach reifen dunklen Himbeeren, etwas Brombeere, einladend und klar. Zeigt sich am Gaumen sehr saftig, öffnet sich mit geschliffenen Tanninen, im Abgang etwas Marzipan.

Intense and bright ruby red garnet highlights, this wine reveals typical aromas of violets and small red berries. There is a distinctive aroma of woodland undergrowth, aromatic wood and a light note of vanilla and preserved fruit, followed by subtle nuances of coffee. The nose is intense, persistent, broad and ethereal. The wine is warm, with a densely-woven and robust texture, while the finish is persistent with roundly defined tannins.

Poggio San Polo is a small estate in Montalcino that a few years ago was acquired by top Veneto producer Allegrini. Famous consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini was brought in and results have been outstanding. This 2006 was scored 94 points by Wine Enthusiast magazine who said "San Polo has shown very impressive work lately and this velvety rich Brunello pushes its ambitions even further. The bouquet offers a long succession of beautiful aromas including black cherry, vanilla, carob, cola, cinnamon spice and black licorice. There’s also a drying mineral note that adds a dusty touch of elegance and sophistication." Very Limited!

Score: 93 - Wine Spectator Shows blackberries and minerals on the nose. Full-bodied, with silky and refined tannins and a solid core of fruit. A little chewy, but it's all there; it's just tight and reserved. Best after 2011.
