This wine is phenomenal! I had it while it was still young and it felt like it was aged properly. I am excited to see where it will go in another 10 years. The Brunello is bold, yet refined all at the same time. There is still much to be unearthed from this wine as the only real flavore I was able to decipher was leather. This however, leads me to believe that beneath the youth there is licorice, currant, and anise hidden behind the silky mouthfeel and velvety tannin structure. Currently the wine is like drinking a high quality Napa Valley Cabernet without the fruit-bomb effect that California is known for. I can only imagine what this wine has to offer once it has had time to rest. I'd buy as much as you could and then give it until 2015 before seeing if has matured, with holding on to it till its 30+ birthday not out of the question.

Well, I bought this back from Italy back in 2004 and I had 2 or 3 bottles that I was hoping to save for a couple years down the road. However, I could not hold off for very long, I think I drank them all within a year. This was a fabulous vino and very approachable, however I sure wish I had saved some for later!

91 WS. Has blackberry and coffee bean with a hint of cream on the nose. Full-bodied and tight with slightly austere and chewy tannins but there is pretty ripe fruit underneath it all. Best after 2010. 16665 cases made. JS --Wine Spectator

Backordered. Due in June 30th. Reserve Yours Today!! Blogging about his 2004 Brunello tastings, Robert Parker’s Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni, expressed his feelings about the Il Poggione Brunello, saying “ On its own, this Brunello is one of the top wines of the vintage.” His subsequent review scored this majestic wine 95 points saying "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of menthol, spices, licorice and leather add final notes of complexity. The estate’s 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and bury in the deepest corner of the cellar." High quality and easy availability (more than 17,000 cases are made) make this Brunello a sure bet for consumers who love the rich tastes of Tuscany. The wine boasts an immediate and intense delivery of blackberry, cedar and pressed blue flowers. It ... Wine Enthusiast. The wines of Il Poggione show consistent exceptional quality year in and year out. In the outstanding 2004 vintage their Brunellos are a benchmark for the rest of the region. This very limited single vineyard Riserva scored 96 point in the Wine Advocate who said "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli emerges from the glass with masses of scorched earth, leather, tar, licorice, menthol and dark fruit. The Riserva shows a touch more inner sweetness, richness and depth in its fruit than the regular bottling, plus a bit more French oak as well. For now, the Riserva is quite reticent and requires air, but with time its awesome richness and power come through in spades. This dark, brooding and authoritative Riserva from Il Poggione is simply gorgeous. Readers who don’t want to pay the premium for the Riserva in 2004 need not worry; I tasted the 2004 regular bottling (twice!) while preparing this article and it is every bit as promising as my review last year suggested. In 2004 the Paganelli vineyard was harvested on the 13th of October, quite late for this estate. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039."

Winemaker's Notes:

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Il Poggione is the result of a careful selection of Sangiovese grapes, grown and harvested by hand in the winery's best vineyards which are over twenty years old. “Brunello Riservas are released no earlier than six years after date of harvest, so the 2004 Il Poggione Riserva has just been released at the winery and we are pleased to offer it at special pre-arrival pricing. This wine comes exclusively from "I Paganelli" vineyard, the best and oldest vineyard on the estate, planted in 1964. Though it has not been reviewed yet, it’s safe to assume a score somewhere in the high 90s. Quantities are much more limited than the normal bottling, so we expect this to sell out quickly.”
