San Giusto a Rentennano Trebbiano-Malvasia Blend Vin Santo del Chianti 1997
Percarlo is made from 100%, estate grown Sangiovese grapes, especially selected from 6 cru zones of our vineyards, which have a low yield of 1kg (resa/ceppo) grapes per vine. To obtain a wine of such extraordinary body and concentration the grapes for Percarlo are usually allowed to mature beyond the normal degree of ripeness. Percarlo is aged in French oak barriques for 20-22 months, bottled unfiltered and held in bottle for another 6 months before being released. The grapes which go into the making of Percarlo are selected from vineyards whose soil dates predominately to the Pliocene epoch. It is composed of layers of sand and stone which lie 2 to 5 meters deep and rest on beds of clay. The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of 270 meters above sea level. Notwithstanding the variations from year to year which occur in every wine faithful to its terroir, each vintage of Percarlo possesses constant characteristics which give it a precise, recognizeable identity. It is a wine with long ageing potential, a robust expression of the terroir of San Giusto. Thinning out of grapes: 50%. A hot and dry summer with some rain before the vintage period. A structured wine with long ageing potential. It is well balanced, characterized by a slow and regular ripening of the grapes.
Editorial Reviews for San Giusto a Rentennano Trebbiano-Malvasia Blend Vin Santo del Chianti
Very mineral water and toasty oak-driven nose with a hint of prune, though with air this gains some freshness, showing curry and white floral complexity. Dense in the mouth and bright, but the red fruit flavors of are showing some oxidative edges. The tannins here are big and dry, chunky, clumsy and a bit hot even. There’s decent length with some sweetness but still so much caramel, toasty oak and a wall of wood tannins that may never really integrate. 87pts
Ruby/velvet rope in color. Alluring cherry perfume with gentle earth & shale. Very elegant with a silky texture and firm but smooth tannins. Perfect balance with dried red cherry and blackberry on the palate. Just a great pleasure to embibe as it showed new notes through the time in glass. A study in class and femininty.
Leathery with a lot of wood on the nose. Some strawberry and raspberry here as well. A bit funky, but drinks nicely. Still very gentle with just a little heat.
