San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"Full ruby-red. Aromas of spicy dark red cherry, blueberry, licorice and tobacco. Juicy and tightly wound but essentially pliant, with smooth red fruit and licorice flavors complicated by leather and coffee. Classically dry Brunello, and a very clear example of a blend of the Brunellos made in two different areas: the sangiovese from S. Angelo in Colle is more minerally and refined, while from S. Angelo Scalo it's much fleshier and sweeter. Finishes with supple but firm tannins...90+" IWC 8/13 "A Brunello with blueberry and blackberries. Bright flowers too. Full and juicy with pretty fruit and a clean and focused finish. Drink now or hold...90" JS 2/13

The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is strikingly beautiful in this vintage. Sweet floral notes meld into raspberries, flowers, mint and spices. A sexy, radiant wine, the 2008 impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The long, polished finish is impeccable. All the elements are in the right place. I don’t expect the 2008 to be a long-term ager, but it is very appealing today. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2020.

Kirsch and wild herb aromas presage cherry and berry flavors in this firm, linear style. The tannins are assertive and slightly dry, with the sweet fruit returning in the end. Best from 2016 through 2028.

Inky dark concentration and bright cherry fruit open the nose of this nicely balanced Brunello. Leather, tobacco and cola notes give it aromatic momentum, and the wine shows bright acidity capped by firm tannins. Pair it with lamb or pork.
