Salmos. Torres 2014

External Review:

Dark in hue and almost opaque, it is fragrant and mineral on the nose while on the palate it is luxurious and oily, but also silky and with a long finish. This darkly coloured wine is reminiscent of jam and liquorish, over a smooth spicy and toasted background, which comes from The French oak barrels.

Torres is one of the world’s most recognizable brands of Spanish wine and is 100% family owned. The company was founded by Jaime and Miguel Torres in 1870, and is now overseen by 4th generation wine producer Miguel Angel Torres. The headquarters of the winery is in Vilafranca del Penèdes in Catalonia, although the family controls several wineries throughout Spain as well as Chile and California. The wines range from entry level premiums, such as Sangre de Toro (the one with the little bull charm on its neck), to quality-driven mid and higher priced ranges, as well as dessert wines and brandies. A large percentage of the Torres vineyards are organic and sustainable, with efforts to increase those numbers. They also contribute to wildlife conservation efforts with a fund to protect the Bonelli's Eagle in Catalonia and the Condor in Chile. Read less

Inky dark colour. Liquorice, liquorice and more liquorice . . . with some black fruit and spice. I like it but not sure about the price.

There is really nice balance and complexity to this wine. I enjoyed this very much.

The Torres Family have been producing exceptional wine from the Penedes region of Spain for generations. It makes sense that they would branch out into the neighboring region of Priorat and start to make top flight wines from there. This latest effort scored 90 points in the Wine Spectator who said "This plush red delivers cherry pie flavors, with baked fruit, pastry and vanilla notes that show toast and licorice accents. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, and bright acidity keeps this lively. Drink now through 2014. Tasted twice, with consistent notes."

ST: Inky ruby. Black raspberry, cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by mineral and floral qualities. Spicy dark berry flavors display admirable purity and depth, picking up subtle vanilla and licorice with air. Finishes fleshy and sweet, with very good persistence and slow-building tannins.

This darkly colored almost opaque Spanish wine has hints of jam and liquor with a smooth spicy and toasted undertones due to the French oak barrels that it is aged in. This wine is a blend of Syrah, Garnacha, Carignan, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
