This wine comes from Leone di Castris, a winery in Southern Italy that just celebrated its 50th anniversary with the 2004 vintage. Their vineyards were planted in 1954 and the vines are mature and low yielding. The winery recently made a smart decision to bring in noted consultant Ricardo Cotarella. He has been at work and carefully oversaw the 2006 vintage production. His focus is on bringing out the best expression in every wine from the least expensive to the rarest and most precious. He’s known for making $10 wines that taste like $20 and $20 wines that taste like $40. This 2006 Riserva is just such a wine. The Wine Advocate recently scored it 90 points and said "The 2006 Salice Salentino Rosso Riserva 50th Vendemmia (Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera) is a very pretty, nuanced wine laced with wild cherries, plums, graphite and spices. Silky tannins frame an exceptional, elegant finish. This cask-aged Salice Salentino is a gem, not to mention an absolute steal for the money. The 50th Vendemmia celebrates the estate’s 50th vintage in grand style."
