CaliforniaRobert Parker 90! Wine Spectator 90!Saldo is another must-try Zin-driven wine gem created by gifted winemaker Dave Phinney. Through the success of The Prisoner, Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in the Northern California growing community. The label was recently sold by Orin Swift Cellars to its new owner, The Prisoner Wine Company. Considering the amazing success of The Prisoner and many other wines from Dave Phinney, it is nearly inconceivable that he began his winemaking career with 2 tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes just a year out of college in 1998! Now he has passed the baton to winemaker Jen Beloz, former winemaker at Ravenswood, to carry on the legacy of The Prisoner and Saldo. In Saldo there are grapes from Sonoma, Napa, Amador, Mendocino, and Contra Costa counties from great vineyards including Aparicio, Duarte, Pato, Eagle Point, Mattern, Taylor, Haywood and Tofanelli. The word "saldo" has many different meanings in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In Spanish, it mainly refers to "balance on hand," and sometimes it can mean "from here and there." This wine represents the best of the best lots from vineyards all across Northern California.Saldo Zinfandel is 85% Zinfandel blended with 9% Petite Sirah and 6% Syrah. The wine has a dark ruby color and opens up with bold aromas of black fruit, blueberry pie, juicy plum and hints of mulling spice. The entry is rich and full, and leads into a broad mid palate with concentration and density, backed by lively acidity. The texture is soft and velvety and the tannins are polished. The finish is long and persistent with notes of toffee, roasted coffee beans and a subtle hint of vanilla spice. It was aged in French and American oak, 20% new. Enjoy Saldo Zin with roast pork, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and cheeses.

The 2011 Zinfandel Saldo includes 11% Petite Sirah and a small amount of Syrah. It exhibits a deep ruby color, better depth than many of the 2011 Zinfandels I tasted, good peppery, meaty ripeness and a pleasant, moderately long finish. It should age nicely for 3–5 years.

Strong burned coffee aromas lead to zesty and spicy toast notes that almost overshadow the black cherry and cinnamon-accented raspberry flavors. Drink now through 2017. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

bursts with aromas of ripe strawberry and black fruits with well integrated oak. The entry is mouth coating and leads into a... (more...) mid palate with structure and good acidity. The finish is bright and long with soft tannis and subtle oak sweetness.
