Saintsbury Pinot Noir Garnet Carneros 2014

Member Review by la dut:

A beautiful garnet red color (kind of just like the name, HA!). The nose is very oaky, reminiscent of sawdust with slight tobacco notes, smoke, and hints of grilled red meat. Dusty with plum, raspberry, and sweet cherry. Initially smooth and medium-full bodied, the wine transitions toward more aggressive tannins, with a feel like suede on the tongue. Sweet cherries and raspberry present initially, and licorice and Asian herbs and spices introduce themselves on the mid-palate. The finish is grippy with lingering cigar, oak, and red fruits. This wine was typically American in style: Very oak driven and powerful. Complex enough, but slightly out of balance, and very young.

Saintsbury:
First published in 1920, George Saintsbury’s “Notes on a Cellar-Book” has inspired many to experiment widely and to form opinions unaffected by the fashion of the day. Included in those ranks are Mr. Ward and Mr. Graves, who named their winery in honor of Professor Saintsbury.

Light--> medium-bodied pinot noir. Crisp with just the right amount of fruit and thoroughly enjoyable on its own.

The Saintsbury Garnet Pinot is not as complex as the more expensive Carneros Pinot Noirs, but it's excellent in its price range. At $15, this is my favorite budget-friendly pinot.

Fresh, vibrant and snappy, offering crisp dark berry fruit, with spice, mineral and cedar flavors. Full-bodied and persistent. Drink now through 2015.

Bright red. Fruit-riven aromas of cherry, raspberry and orange peel. Tangy flavors of spicy red fruits. Finishes brisk and persistent, with easy tannins and a note of strawberry.

The two Pinot Noirs include the screw cap-finished 2009 Garnet. This is a delightful, fruit-driven, lighter style of Pinot with plenty of cherries and spice as well as a hint of herbs. Simple, medium-bodied, but very satisfying, it should be drunk over the next several years.

Garnet long has been one of Californiarsquo;s greatest entry-level Pinot Noirs, and it still is. Maybe the best. The rsquo;09 reflects the balanced vintage. Itrsquo;s a dry, silky, light-bodied wine, with pretty raspberry and cola flavors.

Aromas of black cherry, black tea, forest floor; loamy, full mouthfeel.

A smooth, elegant, refined style, with ripe cherry, mushroom, earth and anise flavors that pick up a floral note. Drink now through 2004.

Winery Tasting Notes - Garnet is produced from Pinot Noir grown in the Carneros district. Our aim in creating each vintage of Garnet is to produce a refreshing, early-drinking style of Pinot, one that is full of cherry/raspberry varietal fruit, enriched and developed by aging in French oak barrels. The Garnet Pinot Noir is enjoyed for the right combination of freshness and extract, grace and length. 2009 is an outstanding vintage for Pinot Noir and the 09 Garnet reflects that lush with bright, refreshing fruit and texture that mirror these flavors in a seamless, rewarding expression of young Pinot Noir. This affordable Pinot Noir is a perennial favorite during the holidays, and complements a wide variety of dishes.
