Editorial Reviews for Saintsbury Chardonnay Carneros Unfiltered
Lemony fruit and lightly buttery, toasty oak greet the nose. On entry this shows big acids that offer up a great spine on which to drape the lightly buttery, creamy citrus, peach, and pear fruits. The wine is spiced yet fresh with a nice middle of the road style and weight. It finishes a bit short and with a bit of sticky wood on the finale but is a fine, typical Chardonnay. Its roundness might make it work well with moderately spicy south American dishes. Find some fish tacos! 87pts

Well focused, with a snappy edge to the peach, pear and apple flavors. Clean and refreshing, it drinks well now through 2000.
Pale yellow. Nectarine, pear and a trace of leesy complexity on the nose and palate. Supple but subtle and laid-back; offers good energy but limited concentration and personality today. A light oak spice component adds interest on the moderately long finish.
Unfiltered since the 1993 vintage, the Saintsbury Carneros Chardonnay has had none of the richness or lush fruit stripped from it. Incredibly toasty, with heady vanilla and oak notes on the nose. Thick and smooth on the palate, with generous amounts of butter and caramel, highlighted with dollops of bananas and cream. Quite a lengthy finish mdash; an excellent buy at this price.
An elegant, restrained style that offers ripe, rich, complex flavors focused in a tight beam centered around green pear, mineral, citrus and spicy notes. Light oak folds in nicely on the finish. Drink now through 2008.
This wine is fermented in French oak barrels and aged sur lie for about eight months. Usually twenty to thirty percent of these barrels are new; the balance have been used once and twice before. During the aging process, the barrels are stirred (batonnâge) to increase yeast contact for added richness. The wine also completes malolactic fermentation in the barrel, which adds roundness to the mouthfeel and complexity to the aroma. Finally, our Carneros Chardonnay has been bottled without filtration since 1993 when, after experimentation, we concluded that unfiltered Chardonnay delivers a more vibrant fruit character and a richer mouthfeel. We are now bottling this Chardonnay with a screwcap-no corkscrew/wine key required-just your bare hands for easy access. - Winery ** Only 12 in Stock **
Winemaker's Notes:
In spite of its ubiquity, of all the noble grapes, Chardonnay is among the best at reflecting its terroir of origin. So it’s vital to grow this variety in a location that will deliver grapes capable of conversion into a wine that displays the real elegance and luxury Chardonnay can offer. The Carneros region is one such region. Nearly 3000 acres of Chardonnay are planted in these bay-cooled, shallow soils. This is a restrained style of California Chardonnay, with apple and citrus fruit backed up with the slightest hint of barrel-derived spice. Quite firm and structured on the palate, made in an elegant, food-friendly style.
