Saint Helena Road Winery is a tribute to the man whose labor, passion and ingenuity created music for millions around the world, as a musician and reedmaker, for nearly seventy years. Roy J. Maier, was a musician during the early jazz era of the Roaring Twenties, and a member of the world famous “Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra,” featuring vocalists Bing Crosby and the “Rhythm Boys”, Alton Rinker and Harry Barris. This Band was stacked with the hottest musicians of the era. Bix Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Chester Hazlett, Charlie Strickfaden, Charlie Margulus, Roy Bargy, Lenny Hayton, Kurt Dieterle, Irving Friedman; all spent time with Whiteman. Roy Maier played Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo,Oboe, English Horn and Bassoon, clearly the most versatile musician in the orchestra. Roy can be seen in Universal Pictures 1930 film, “The King of Jazz”, the first musical motion picture filmed in color, where Roy was featured in several comical cameos. Paul Whiteman commissioned young George Gershwin to compose "Rhapsody In Blue" which became the orchestra's signature music, as well as an "American Classic". ( See a list of Roy Maier's recordings at the bottom of this page) During the great depression of the 1930’s, Roy set down his instruments and began designing and assembling machinery, automating the process of reed making for woodwind instruments; making reeds available to the masses and producing uniform, consistent playability. Reeds manufactured on Roy’s machines, the brands Rico Royal, La Voz, Premium, Diamondcut, Symetricut, Fredrick Hemke, Mitchel Lurie, and Rico, “The Worlds Most Popular Reed” as well as Roy J Maier Signature reeds for the Selmer Corp. (makers of premium woodwind instruments), are sold around the globe. Roy's factory was the largest of its kind. The Maier name was synonymous with innovation and leadership in musical manufacturing for over six decades. The family continued after Roy’s death in 1981, developing cane plantations and improving manufacturing techniques, orchestrating the reeds from the growth and processing of the raw materials, through manufacturing and packaging, and finishing with our distribution network. We controlled our own destiny, and in doing so, decided to sell the company in 1996, and head off into separate directions. Roy’s grandson, and a member of Roy J. Maier Corporation’s Board of Director’s, Richard Maier, and his wife Patty, have taken their passion for wine and along with their two sons Ryan and Danny, purchased 60 acres in the Mayacmas Mountains. Located on the West side of Spring Mountain, the Sonoma side, they have established the vineyards that supply the grapes for the winery. Richard spent nearly 20 years in the research and development of cane plantations for the reed company and their farming operations. The ‘Roy J Maier’ label, blends the juices from the grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, into a kaleidoscope of flavors, aromas and colors; offering a wine to thoroughly savor, from your first sample of the bouquet, to your last satisfying sip. In addition to the vineyards and winery facility, the Maier’s have developed the main Estate Home on the property, as a luxury vacation rental, providing the guests to the Napa/Sonoma wine region, with a unique opportunity to experience the premium wine country from their spectacular, mountain vineyard property.
