Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: The 2015 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes offers the most finesse and elegance of the three cuvees, and is slightly less exotic, yet more refined and pretty. Offering lots of strawberry and framboise fruits, loads of cedary spice, full-bodied richness and building, polished tannin, this terrific wine shines for its purity and finesse. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. (10/19/17)

[Blind] Lightish red color. Very odd nose - wet dog, juicy kiwi and strawberry. Medium body, tannic, acidic. Old-world style. Ager. $20

The 2012 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a gorgeous effort that’s made from 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that comes from three terroirs, the Louisianne, La Moutte and the Souteyrades lieux-dits, all of which are located on the lower plateau near the estate. It offers impressive kirsch, blackberry, toasted spice and licorice to go with a medium to full-bodied, sexy, supple and hard to resist style on the palate. Readers need to buy this by the case and drink it over the coming decade.

Deep ruby. Intense red berry preserve and floral aromas are lifted and sharpened by a zesty mineral note and pick up a spicy nuance with air. Sappy, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering appealing raspberry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors and a touch of allspice. The spicy quality comes back strong on the finish, which is given shape by even tannins.

Starting out, the 2011 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvedre that spent 6 months in old foudre followed by a year in concrete tank. Its ruby/purple color is followed by a rich plum and kirsch driven-bouquet, with plenty of smoked meats, wild herbs, violets and spice-cake all emerging from the glass. A supple, heady and character filled Gigondas that has a knockout texture, notable freshness and a solid length, it should have a solid decade of longevity. Drink now–2021.

Deep ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, potpourri and smoky minerals, with a touch of Asian spices gaining strength with air. Densely packed but light on its feet, offering sweet, oak-spiced dark berry flavors and a touch of cola. Fine-grained tannins add shape to the clinging finish. This has gained in energy since I tasted it a year ago.

The 2009 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes (a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre from 40-year-old vines) is a rich, full-bodied Gigondas with notes of crushed rock, boysenberry, black raspberry, camphor, and a hint of pen ink.
