What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

The 2005 Gigondas has good structure, low pH, and a nice acid profile. Deep ruby/purple with notes of flowers, blueberries, and black fruits, the wine is rich, heady, and best given 2-3 years of cellaring and drunk over the following 10-12 years. This wine is composed of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Cinsault. The 2003 Vintage received a 94 rating from Robert Parker. This wine is true to its varietal and terroir: dark fruits and spice reign, but there are also subtle mineral and floral

Rating: 90-93 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 Deep ruby. Spicy cherry and redcurrant on the nose, with a strong peppery aspect. Seriously structured Gigondas with deep, powerful kirsch and licorice flavors and excellent finishing thrust. This reportedly fermented until September of 2006.
