What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

"A structured version, with a layer of bacony toast guiding tar, black currant and fig flavors. Toast holds the upper hand on the finish for now, but this has solid depth. Drink now through 2009...90." WS 4/08

The 2006 Cotes du Rhone was made from 100% Syrah that was actually declassified wine from the estate vineyards in Gigondas blended with some stuff he buys from Vinsobres and Rasteau. This is dense ruby/purple, big, deep, and fruity, with loads of blackberry fruit. It is not terribly complex at the moment, but mouthfilling, very supple-textured, and corpulent. This wine should drink nicely for 4-5 years. Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 87 Points
