What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.

Winemakers Notes

Colour:
Pale straw with green hues.

Aroma:
Intense, powerful aromas of passionfruit, blackcurrant and gooseberry, along with lifted notes of grapefruit leap out of the glass.

Palate:
A full, crisp and powerful wine with intense flavours of passion fruit and blackcurrant, along with underlying gooseberry and herbal tones. Mouth-watering acidity and an intense minerality is balanced by a full yet elegant palate that leads to a long lingering finish.

Ageing Potential:
Perfect for drinking immediately, this Sauvignon Blanc will read more...be at its best over the next 1 to 2 years.

Winemaking:
Fruit for this wine was sourced from a variety of vineyards and sub-regions including the Lower Wairau, Rapaura, O’Dwyers Road and the Brancott Valley. Each vineyard block was harvested when it had reached maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness. Every load of grapes was transported to the winery with haste and pressed off immediately to minimize skin contact and juice deterioration. After settling, the juice from each batch was fermented using a variety of selected yeasts in 100% stainless steel at cool temperatures to retain fruit flavour and freshness. Each batch was assessed for quality and then only the best components were selected for their potential to add to the overall quality and complexity of the Saint Clair blend. Once blended the resulting wine was then carefully prepared for bottling.
