Saint Amour Jean-Claude Dufour 1998

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/123514.Saint Amour is an appellation for red wines created in 1946 although viticulture here goes back to at least the Romans from the commune of Saint Amour-Bellevue. This is in the Beaujolais region about eight miles south of the town of Macon and is one of the Cru Beaujolais appellations. The name is derived from that of a Roman soldier who became one of the early Christian matrys Saint Ameteur, and because of this name around 25% of sales take place around Valentines Day.Like all red Beaujolais it is made from the gamay grape,a cross between pinot noir and a white grape called gouais introduced by thr Romans. My bottle comes from the small domaine of Jean-Claude Dufour.I started the bottle last night with my supper of roast pork.It is a full bodied and well structured wine with plenty of a blackberry and blackcurrant style fruit with more than a hint of licorice, pepper and spice especially on the finish and soft tannins. In short this is a lovely wine that would pair with many foods
