Tenuta Castelbuono is the latest project of the Lunelli family, who for 3 generations has been at the helm of the world-renowned Ferrari sparkling wines. Located in the heart of Umbria, over half of the vineyards at Tenuta Castelbuono are dedicated to Sagrantino. This vibrant grape variety is regarded as the future of Umbria and Montefalco Sagrantino was granted DOCG status, Italy’s highest quality level, in 1992. Amid Tenuta Castelbuono’s vineyards, one of Italy’s greatest sculptors, Arnaldo Pomodoro, created a truly outstanding winery called Carapace. La Tartaruga (“turtle”), as Pomodoro affectionately refers to it, is a curved, turtle shell-shaped structure made with specially-treated copper covering a glass-walled tasting room set over the sunken cellars. "This project is the realization of a dream," Pomodoro said recently in his Milan studio. "I always wanted to be an architect. Now I'm doing it. This is sculpture that becomes architecture.” Production Area From the historic Brogliano vineyard, where the silt-clay soils produce grapes of outstanding quality Grape Varieties 100% Sagrantino Vinification Hand harvested in October.
