Rutini Malbec 2012

Member Review by Argovino:

In Argentina, Rutini is among the most prestigious widely available brands, and this wine offers a few hints why. The nose is a mix of orange marmelade and tire rubber; in the mouth, it’s somewhat square but full of characteristic malbec berry-cherry flavor. A little grainy, but a few years of age might sort that out. (AV 87, http://argovino.com/?p=772)

Rutini is a winery in the Maipu Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. It was founded in the late 19th century by Italian winemaker Felipe Rutini, originally called La Rural, with the motto Labor et Perseverantia (“Labor and Perseverence.”) Eventually the winery expanded into Los Corralitos and Medrano. Upon his passing in 1915, his descendants continued the operation, producing fine Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Chenin Blanc. In 1925, Rutini was the first winery to plant in the as yet unchartered Topungato region, recognizing its excellent viticultural possibilities for its climate and elevation. In 1994, Rutini was acquired by Argentinian winemaking icons Nicolas Catena and Jose Benegas Lynch, who have elevated the winery to become one of the region’s top quality producers. Principal winemaker is Mariano Di Paola, who oversees production at the state of the art facilities.  Read less

Very drinkable, light wine. A nice choice for dinner that goes with fish, pork or beef.

Dunkles Rubinrot, intensiver Duft von Brombeeren, Zimt, Zedernholz und Gewürzen, saftige Fruchtdichte, konzentriert und elegant.

The dark side of malbec, this tastes like roasted black cherries and minerals. Give it air to reveal its sweet red fruit, and serve it with steak.

The purple-colored 2006 Malbec was sourced from a 65-year-old vineyard and aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak. The nose emits scents of cedar, tobacco, blueberry, and black raspberry leading to a firm, slightly muted wine. The flavors are savory and it has good grip but the finish is slightly compact. Another two years of bottle age may round it out, but it should be consumed over the near term.

This is an excellent example of high-altitude malbec, grown in the Alto Valle de Uco above 3,200 feet, full of fresh, almost mineral acidity, juicy cranberry aromas and foresty character on the palate; its incisive tannins create a firm, athletic structure. Drink it now with a steak, or save space in your cellar, as it will most likely evolve with age.

Fine core of raspberry and blackberry, with ample structure as well. Good mineral, toast, briar and meat hints underneath. Shows more muscle but stays nicely balanced through the finish. Drink now through 2007.

Winemaker Mariano De Paola has a way with La Consulta-area Malbec. His are structured, tight when young, and elegant when they hit three years in bottle. This youngster is full of pop and color. It's true Malbec, with broad shoulders, layered fruit and a toasty, full finish. A drink-or-hold type, and not expensive for what you're getting.

Ripe blackberry and black currant fruit, along with cocoa, loam and spice notes. Fleshy, structured finish lets the fruit stretch out. Very solid. Drink now through 2006.
