Rutherford Wine Company is family owned and managed with a portfolio of wines representing the rich diversity of California’s outstanding appellations. Uncompromising and ecologically far-sighted viticulture is an ethical imperative for us. Though more labor intensive than prevalent commercial winegrowing methods, our efforts are rewarded with fruit rich in flavor and character. And great fruit is a prerequisite for making great wine.
Editorial Reviews for Rutherford Ranch Merlot
Peach pit and hints of minerality greet the nose followed by faint freshly cut grass and green fruit aromas with a hint of yeastiness. Broad and bit soft in the mouth, this is nicely transparent with soft flavors of white peach, lemon, and green mango. A soft, and somewhat creamy style of Sauvignon Blanc, some bitter citrus oils appear on the backend, with a hint of salty minerality adding a touch of complexity to the modest finish. 86pts
Very fine and focused on the nose with notes of apple butter, pear and lime leaf over gently nutty and toasty oak with vanilla and floral highlights. Lightweight, clean and fresh in the mouth with lovely lemon juice acidity driving right through the palate here. The flavors of apple, smoked nuts and pithy lime are clear and vivid in the mouth, fading rather quickly on the modest finish. Zesty and fun to drink with a light and savory heirloom apple note developing with air. The finish fleshes out with additional air, so this might need a little time to show it's best. 88pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium
Spicy and a bit weedy on the nose with lovely hints of vanilla, tomato and herbs framing the lightly spicy red cherry fruit aromas that pick up a dusting of cocoa with some air. A touch soft in the mouth, this does have an attractive texture, rather broad and a bit chewy but at the same time transparent and fresh. the Flavors are a bit simple, moderately oaky red cherry fruit with some nice spice and herb accents along with milk chocolate on the finish which turns a cranberry toned. It has everything it should and is a lovely very accessible example of Merlot. Easy to drink and understand with lovely freshness. 88pts
Fresh on the nose with classic toasty oak, coconut, pineapple and lime aromas accented with a touch of nectarine and some popcorn. Soft and slightly sweet on entry, this shows some early caramel flavors layered over ripe pineapple fruit with vanilla top notes. A bit ponderous in the mouth, it nonetheless delivers fairly classic rendition of creamy Napa Chardonnay. The finish is clean and bright though the oak is a touch aggressive here. Definitely not my style, but this should please many people. 85pts
This is a pretty classic nose full of nuanced dill, eucalyptus and tomato leaf aromas over a base of black currant fruit framed with a nice note of fresh oak with a hint of caramel. Nicely light and fresh in the mouth, this could use a bit more acidity, though the fruit flavors recall tart red raspberry and wild blackberry which helps with the balance. A touch of sweetness also serves to give the impression that this might be softer than it actually is, but the flavors are classic California Cabernet, fresh with hints of herbs, wood spice, and vanilla all presented in a fresh, medium bodied package. This wine is a winner and is a sure fire crowd pleaser for Cabernet drinkers out there. 88pts
Nicely balanced on the nose with peach and mineral notes, topped by gentle herbal and floral tones. Zesty and nicely focused in the mouth, this appears a little lean at first but has lovely depth of flavors and a concentrated, if focused, core of peachy fruit. There’s a hint of powder tannin that adds a little peach skin here and complicating notes of pineapple and green plum emerge on the back end. The finish is fairly long and zesty, yet with a nice layer of fruit that keeps the acid balanced. Light and fresh with a nice blend of both warm and cool climate traits. 88pts
A touch of dusty earth, perhaps even stemmy on the nose, which also shows red currant fruit, well measured vanilla and lightly toasted spices and a touch of toasted almond and dry fruit. Medium bodied and fairly bright on entry, this blends some riper flavors of dried fruit and prune with light caramel edges and layers it all over red currant and cherry fruit. There are nice spice and vanilla accents showing on the mid palate that add complexity but don’t overpower the fruit, leading to a slightly tannic but palate-freshening finish thats pretty long with lingering, slightly spicy black cherry flavors and lightly chewy fruit tannins. With air, a subtle herbal note emerges on the palate as well. Love the way this feels in the mouth, though the flavors are just a touch riper than a very solid value. 88pts
Four and a half glasses
Very decent Napa chardonnay. Not overly complex but a nice balance of oak, fruit, vanilla, subtle spice and a touch of honey.
Low acid smoothness for a budget cab. Light and extremely dry.
Four and a half glasses
Citrusy, melon flavors. Relatively smooth, though slightly hot.
Oaky and tropical on the nose with some nice overtones of ripe melon. Medium body, sprite acidity with some light butterscotch. A nice white pizza wine!

Medium-bodied, our 2004 Merlot has soft, supple tannins with a long, satisfying finish. Dried cherry, blueberry and rich, dark chocolate intertwine for soft, lush aromas. -From the Winemaker
Firm, but with good intensity to the black currant and plum flavors. Herb tones fold into mocha-scented cedary oak and ripe tannins on the finish.
A deliscious and versatile wine that pairs well with a wide range of dishes- steamed or grilled fish; crab and prawns; grilled veal chops with muschrooms; late summer vegetables such as red peppers, corn, butternut squash and pumpkin.
Ripe and pithy, with spicy pear and apple flavors that are complex and focused. Drink now. 5,500 cases made. -by Wine Spectator the 2006 Rutherford Ranch Chardonnay starts off with aromas of freshly picked apricots and sweet honey. The fruit theme
A family owned winery for three generations, Rutherford Ranch is located in the heart of Napa Valley's Rutherford district. Beverage Dynamics scored this 94 points saying "An intriguing blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec; aged 14 months in oak; rich and chewy, with dark chocolate, vanilla and black fruit flavors; very subtle finish; an elegant wine at a great price point."
Good, rich Zinfandel that brings a Napa elegance and sophistication to the variety?s wild and woolly personality. The briary, brambly thing is all here, with wild berry, cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper flavors, and the exuberance is distinctively
