Founded in 1972, Rutherford Hill Winery is a pioneer in the development of California Merlot. The grape growers who founded Rutherford Hill carefully studied the geography of the region and capitalized on climate and soil conditions that resembled those of Pomerol, the small but distinctive Merlot-growing region of Bordeaux. And what a promising discovery that was - one that has borne plenty of fruit - specifically, the lush, purple-black grapes that have contributed so much to Rutherford Hill's success. Today, Merlot remains the flagship wine of the company with 75 percent of Rutherford Hill's production dedicated to this varietal, one of the leading Merlots of Napa Valley. When the Terlato family of the Terlato Wine Group (TWG), Lake Bluff, Illinois, purchased the winery in 1996, they immediately began to apply their guiding principle: Quality is a way of life. The pursuit of excellence began with a comprehensive review of all aspects of the facility that resulted in significant enhancements. TWG Chairman Anthony Terlato works with Rutherford Hill winemakers to tackle the challenges of consistently improving the wine, vintage after vintage. The philosophy that the Terlatos apply to all their ventures was evident at Rutherford Hill from the start. Their first step was to reduce production by 14,000 cases. This eliminated inferior lots from the final blend, and met the demanding new quality standard they had set. Building on Tradition Another way of putting quality first was to create an environment in which reserve wines could be given the time, care and consideration they needed within the Rutherford Hill portfolio. A new state-of-the art facility for the production of reserve wines - a "winery within a winery" - began taking shape in spring of 2000 and was functional in time for that year's harvest. Costing more than $4 million, the 5,100-square foot winery addition has 24 fermentation tanks ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 gallons. It is self-contained, complete with its own crusher/de-stemmer, press, refrigeration capabilities (tanks are jacketed for both warming and cooling glycol) and harvest crew. Rutherford Hill was an innovator in Napa Valley in the building of caves and employment of a pallet-stacking system within those caves. Year-round, 8,000 wine-filled French and American oak barrels age in an ideal wine-storage environment of 59ºF/90 percent humidity. The result is a substantial reduction in wine evaporation, creating wines with lower concentrations of alcohol. The improvements in the caves that began in 1999 illustrate the big-picture view that embodies the Terlato family's commitment to quality. Year-round, 8,000 French and American oak barrels age wine in an ideal, consistent storage environment of 59ºF, and up to 90 percent humidity. Read less

Rutherford Ranch is my monthly case wine. It is an exceptional value at $14.99. (case price at 13.50 each) The wine opens with the scent of terroir- earthiness and an abundance of fruit primarily bing cherries and a little bit of blackberries and blueberries and touches of cedar. Nicely balanced in it's acidity and the flavors linger and last making you want another glass. This is a great Cabernet to pair with steaks and lamb, especially ones with a bit of fat as it will bring out the flavor of the steaks. Great drinking wine just by itself for an everyday wine. Compares to some of the wines in the upper $20's range. However when you does not have the complexities and robustness of wines in the high $20's up to the $50 range.

One of the signature grape varieties from Rutherford Hill and it shows. Dark violet color. Aromas of berries, both red and black. Medium bodies with strong tastes of blackberries, cherries, and chocolate with additional hints of vanilla, mocha, cinnamon, and tobacco. Very dry and tannic with a silky smooth finish. Very well blended and would go great with red meat of any kind.

Deep ruby in colour, rims turning garnet. Quite intense though youthful nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, liquorice and smoke. Medium acidity, high tannin and full body, medium intensity of palate in vanilla, blackberry, black cherries and oak of medium length. Acceptable quality and ready to drink but can develop further.

A fine Merlot from a winery with a very long track record of success with this difficult variety. The wine is rich and almost sweet in blackberries and cherries, yet it finishes dry, in a flourish of smooth tannins. Drink now. - S.H. Offers good focus and structure, with black cherry and toasty oak aromas leading to plum, dried herb and spice notes. Drink now through 2015. 34,929 cases made. -TF Color: GarnetAroma: Cherry, strawberry, cloveFlavor: Smooth, round tannins and flavors of cherries leading to a mocha finish Wine drinkers gravitate to Merlot for its accessibility, generous fruit flavors and curvaceous texture. Capturing and presenting Merlots style and charm has been our primary mission since our founding. Experience matters. Rutherford Hill 2007 Merlot benefits from 3 decades of Napa Valley history with this classic wine. It is an elegant and refined interpretation of the classic Bordeaux varietal. Estate vineyards that we purchased and developed in the 90s...

A classic full-bodied California Cabernet with a rich ruby color and and flavors of sweet black cherry, plum, and blackberry, followed by a cascade of firm tannins.

Elevated in its tannic structure, and the way the oak plays with the ripe fruit. The flavors of blackberries, black currants and sweet smoky cedar lead to a rich, spicy finish. Very nice Napa Cabernet at this price.

Also a superb value, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (82% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot) exhibits a dark ruby/purple-tinged color, a classic bouquet of black currants, white chocolate, and subtle herb as well as oak notes, plush, succulent flavors, sweet tannin, and a luscious texture. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

This simple cabernet has the richness of chocolate cake, its dark, baked-fruit flavors masked behind equally dark oak. A soft red for roast beef.
