Rustenberg Stellenbosch John X Merriman South Africa 2007
This stunning Bordeaux blend is one of South Africa's most iconic bottlings. It's named for the Prime Minister of the Cape who purchased and revitalized part of the historical Rustenberg estate in the late 1800s. It delivers intense, smoky flavors of tobacco, cherry, licorice, and plum intertwined with complex notes of mineral and spice.
Smooth and relaxing. A bit of citrus. I wish the flavor lasted longer.
Classic vegetal (green pepper) aromas with tobacco leaf chocolate, coffee, just a hint of barnyard and a pleasant heat. Full of warm ripe black fruit and a lot of structure on the palate, with dark chocolate and more herbal vegetation. Very tasty.
deeply garnet verging on purple, full-bodied, lush tannic structure, balanced acidity. intensely minerally, almost metallic, in a super-appealing way. brambly, blackberry leaf, black coffee or dark cocoa bitterness. a little woody on the finish. I'm stealing this.
Smells of smoky wood and peppers. Nice velvety texture. Like :)
Enjoyed. Nice lingering finish. Would buy again.
Sounds delish.....wonder how it would work with Basque Chicken & Chorizo......

Dunkles Rubinrot.
A red blend made of Cabernet, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Fruit-driven but possessing the depth of a classic Bordeaux, with flavors of tobacco and blackcurrant. Solid but integrated tannins help this wine hold up to hearty meat-based fare.
4 1/2 Stars, 2010 edition. Platter's South African Wine Guide. A Proprietary Blend wine from Stellenbosch in South Africa. 2007 Rustenberg John X Merriman 750ml
On first impression, the nose suggests a quality-driven Left Bank Bordeaux, as herbs, new cedar and cassis mingle brilliantly on the aromatics. A more forward fruit expression of cassis and black plum on the palate is reminiscent of a Napa cab blend... Neil Mechanic. A Proprietary Blend wine from Stellenbosch in South Africa. 2007 Rustenberg John X Merriman 750ml
Strong aromas of cassis, cocoa nibs, fresh mint sprigs, black currant leaf and licorice are the first things you experience with this wine. After that, the creamy mouth provides loads of black berry, plum and anise flavors that stay through the finish. A firmly structured and well-balanced Bordeaux-style blend.
Plum and Cigar box aromatics prelude a multi-layered palate with an elegant tannin structure. A Bordeaux blend that typifies Rustenberg terroir with good ageing potential, if cellared correctly
