Russian Hill Pinot Noir Estate White Label 2008

Member Review by WineborkDotCom:

Elegant, full cherry/berry flavors highlight this excellent Pinot blended from Russian Hill's estate vineyards. Spicy vanilla notes and an attractive sappy/herbal (rosemary?) edge add to the complexity. Much more structured and briary and less floral and silky at this stage compared to the delicious 2007 Russian River bottling; also considerably more tannic. The tannins show a slight bitterness in the mouth and finish.

The history of grape growing in our region begins with the early Russian settlers who were the first emigrants to settle the area and plant vines. A little known fact is that these plantings, which begin in 1817, were the earliest in northern California, antedating those of Padre Jose Altimira in Sonoma Valley. The region became an official American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983 and its boundaries underwent an expansion in 2005. The area now boasts over 15,000 acres of vineyards, 200 grape growers and 75 wineries. The wines of the Russian River Valley are increasingly recognized as among the best in the world and the appellation is often quoted as one of the top in the country. Our "cool climate viticulture" conditions are perfect for growing certain wine grapes, especially Pinot noir and Chardonnay, and recent experience has also shown that "cool climate" Syrah is a distinctive wine unmatched by its warm climate counterpart. Russian Hill Estate Winery has found its perfect home. Russian Hill Estate, a family owned and operated winery, is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Using the utmost care from vineyard to bottle, Russian Hill is dedicated to the production of world-class Pinot noir and Syrah. The key philosophy of the winery is to maintain the highest degree of excellence in viticultural and winemaking practices to allow wines to fully express the various vineyards that are their source. Edward Gomez and Ellen Mack established Russian Hill in 1997 after a two-year intensive search for the appropriate site. It was imperative that the land be capable of producing outstanding estate vineyards but also allow for construction of a winery. Only by having full control of both the vineyard and wine production, did the team at Russian Hill feel they could produce wines of the quality they envisioned. Read less

Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Wonderful, ripe, pure Russian River fruit highlights this delicious 2007 Pinot Noir. Cherry/raspberry fruit has great depth and is accompanied by a positively seductive rosebud floral edge. Not particularly complex, but who cares? - this is a delight to drink, with mouthfilling fruit and immaculate finish. If you wanted to demonstrate to someone what a Pinot Noir ought to smell and taste like, this would be a perfect example. At $32, this wine is a steal in the world of top Russian River Pinot's.

Aweful! Does not taste anything like a Pinot Noit... way too young to be selling! It has no body or depth, and is tangy and rough. Improves very slightly with food. Would not recommend to anyone
