Russian Hill Estate Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Leras 2008

Member Review by Wine Fire:

More elegant and balanced than the 2002 vintage, this is a still fairly thin wine that changes little over time, but it has all the classic aromas and flavors of California Pinot. The nose and palate both show pleasant notes of tomato, blueberry and plum, and it has a bright, smooth, fruity finish.

The history of grape growing in our region begins with the early Russian settlers who were the first emigrants to settle the area and plant vines. A little known fact is that these plantings, which begin in 1817, were the earliest in northern California, antedating those of Padre Jose Altimira in Sonoma Valley. The region became an official American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983 and its boundaries underwent an expansion in 2005. The area now boasts over 15,000 acres of vineyards, 200 grape growers and 75 wineries. The wines of the Russian River Valley are increasingly recognized as among the best in the world and the appellation is often quoted as one of the top in the country. Our "cool climate viticulture" conditions are perfect for growing certain wine grapes, especially Pinot noir and Chardonnay, and recent experience has also shown that "cool climate" Syrah is a distinctive wine unmatched by its warm climate counterpart. Russian Hill Estate Winery has found its perfect home. Russian Hill Estate, a family owned and operated winery, is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Using the utmost care from vineyard to bottle, Russian Hill is dedicated to the production of world-class Pinot noir and Syrah. The key philosophy of the winery is to maintain the highest degree of excellence in viticultural and winemaking practices to allow wines to fully express the various vineyards that are their source. Edward Gomez and Ellen Mack established Russian Hill in 1997 after a two-year intensive search for the appropriate site. It was imperative that the land be capable of producing outstanding estate vineyards but also allow for construction of a winery. Only by having full control of both the vineyard and wine production, did the team at Russian Hill feel they could produce wines of the quality they envisioned. Read less

Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Smoke and damp earthy scents, including moss and mushroom, plus old spice cologne and worn leather burst from the bottle at uncorking. The palate opens with mushroom, mineral, spice, and moist forest floor, followed by black cherry and plum, plus smoked sausage and old leather. Pleasant acidity adds a bit of astringency on the back. This surly child smiles brightest at about one hour. Soft tannins lead to a delicate but quickly fading finish. Closes down to a sharp, thin and unbalanced version of itself at 1 ½ hours, lacking the breadth and depth of earlier savoring. However, at two hours, it opens again momentarily, with a surprising restoration of its former arrays on nose and palate, and a fresh zestiness that seems to come from nowhere. This cycle of opening and closing repeats itself numerous times over a four hour period, with a slow disintegration in elegance and fullness.

Medium garnet in color to the rim. Lovely aromas of ripe cherry strawberry and rhubarb emerge with a touch of cinnamon spice and light oak. Ripe and smooth on the entry succulent red fruits are supported by excellent acidity keeping the wine elegant and light. Slight earth and herbal notes contribute to the complexity and gradually taper off on the soft fruit-driven finish. A classy and tasty effort! John Perry.
