External Reviews for Ruffino Il Ducale
Never a barn-burner, yet predictably good, the rustic and very real Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale Tan stays steady on the palate with black fruit and sweet earth.
The bright flavors of cherry and raspberry feel tangy and light. Serve with a wedge of aged pecorino.
Dusty and a bit leathery on the nose, but there's fruit enough on the palate, fleshing out with black cherry and plum flavors and picking up touches of tobacco on the finish. At 80% Sangiovese and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it's a harmonious blend designed to introduce new drinkers to Tuscan wines.
Sangiovese 60%, Merlot 20%, Syrah 20%. Not reviewed; 2007 vintage rated 'Smart Buys' and 90 points by Wine Spectator: A little lean, but there's plenty of ripe fruit, exhibiting berry and blueberry aromas and flavors, with hints of light toasty oak. This should soften with bottle age. Best after 2011.
Color: Ruby red Aroma: The bouquet is fruity and inviting, with notes of plums, cherries, black berries, and mulberries. The Syrah adds pleasant spicy hints which intertwine with scents of undergrowth and Mediterranean herbs, characteristic of Sangiovese and with the softness and roundness of the Merlot. Tasting profile: The taste is well-balanced, with a rich, fruity core and sweet, yet fragrant tannins. Elegant notes of nutmeg and cigar box meet with layers of wild cherries and blue plums, leading towards a refreshing and long-lasting aftertaste, where hints of fresh mint leaves and plain chocolate appear.
