Ruffino Ducale Chianti Classico Riserva 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Soft on the nose with gentle notes of leather and earth, a touch of woodsy spice, a touch of violet a little smoke and some dark cherry tones. Big fruit up front backed by solid, integrated acidity with very polished tannins give this a round, pleasant mouthfeel, yet without not much complexity or depth, A bit diffuse on the mid-palate with nice flavors of raspberry/black raspberry, a touch of earth, mint and leather, but this has the feel of not trying hard enough but it’s still hard to fault it too much. 87pts

Ruffino, produced in Tuscany, is one of the most recognizable brands of Italian wine. The first vintage of the famous Chianti was produced in 1877 by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino. Within a few years, their wines were gaining recognition for their quality and winning awards and medals at international competitions. By the 1890s, the wine was exported internationally. In 1913, with the absence of any heirs to pass down the Ruffino estate, the retiring Ruffino cousins sold the company to the Folonari family, who elevated the brand to huge commercial success. In 1916, the Duke of Aosta named Ruffino as the official wine of the Italian royal court. The Riserva Ducale is created in 1927 to honor this event. Fun fact: Ruffino Chianti was reputedly among the wines sold by pharmacists during the Prohibition, said to calm nerves. Just after the Prohibition, in the early 1930s, the Ruffino Orivieto Classico was first released. Into the 1940s, World War II was a mixed blessing for Ruffino. The original Pontassieve Cellars were destroyed in a bomb attack, but this prompted the Folonaris to reconstruct with more up-to-date technology, as well as build and establish new estates and expand their enterprise. In 1947, the first bottlings of the acclaimed Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti Classico Riserva were produced. In the mid-1970s, Ruffino decided to abandon the iconic fiasco, the straw-bottomed bottle, and introduced the more upscale “Florentine” bottle for packaging. The next couple of decades saw several new additions to the portfolio and more worldwide success, overseen by a new generation of the Folonari family, Marco and Paolo. The ubiquitous wine brand is still enjoyed as one of the classic examples of Tuscan wines. Read less

Dark translucent purple in the glass. Spicy, woody nose. Smooth, but assertive entry to the palate. Not a lot of fruit, this is a real wine, not a cherry syrup flavored drink. Hint of, get this, cinnamon. Fairly light acids, No tannin bite at all on the back of the palate.

The Ducal (so-called tan label) is usually a reliable Tuscan wine, and the 2010 is pretty much in line with this sentiment; the cherry flan and leather on the nose and more cherry sheen on the palate with soft tannin makes for a longish finish. Good value. 88 points.

Dark attractive purple colour with a nice nose, cherries, spice, meaty, the wine smelt "hot". The palate was soft, but soft like it had been sat out for 3 days (it hadn't!), nice tannins, smooth and pleasant, a hot little ending and a little vegetal too and no real hold on the finish. Started well, but lost its way on the palate.

One of the most classic Sangioveses to date. Very elegant and delicate wild berry taste with a pinch of light spice. Subtle at first but any amazing pair with any meaty Italian red sauce. Must try.

Potpourri, dark red fruit and leather on the nose. Raspberry fruit on the palette and a bit of copper penny. Tobacco on the finish.

A bit of a hot nose, with cherries and leather. Good acidity, like most Italian wines, paired well with salami, cheese and salad. Well balanced, decent fruits - red berries and plums. Some subtle earthiness, but its a fairly fruit forward and simple wine.

Colour: Ruby red with garnet hues Aroma: A very classic Chianti Classico bouquet with notes of violets, cherries, plums and inviting spicy sensations. It is elegant and lush, inviting yet subtle, featuring all the distinctive characters of a great Chianti Classico. Tasting profile: Full bodied, with a generous, fruity core, where the notes of cherries and small berry fruits intertwine with sensations of Mediterranean herbs, such as rosemary and thyme, and hints of oak. The alcohol is well-integrated in the structure and the tannins are impressive, yet round and soft. The aftertaste is very long and reminiscent of violets, nutmeg, plums and sweet tobacco.

Lean but polished, with a narrow band of flavors. Picks up on the finish enough to suggest it might be best after 1995.

Ducale reservoir is successful to maintain in the time its great reputation, thanks to desire of Ruffino to always obtain the maximum expression of quality from the grapes Sangiovese, cultivated on hills of the Chianti Classic.

Two years of oak aging produces a full-flavored Chianti Classico with flavors and aromas of red plum, cherry skin, new saddle leather and damp earth. With its easily recognized tan label, this Chianti Classico will please even the most discriminating Italian wine lovers.

This vintage of Chianti is full-flavored with berry fruits and cocoa and it goes down the pipes with an undeniable smoothness. This goes quite nicely with fowl and rich meat dishes.
