Ruffino, produced in Tuscany, is one of the most recognizable brands of Italian wine. The first vintage of the famous Chianti was produced in 1877 by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino. Within a few years, their wines were gaining recognition for their quality and winning awards and medals at international competitions. By the 1890s, the wine was exported internationally. In 1913, with the absence of any heirs to pass down the Ruffino estate, the retiring Ruffino cousins sold the company to the Folonari family, who elevated the brand to huge commercial success. In 1916, the Duke of Aosta named Ruffino as the official wine of the Italian royal court. The Riserva Ducale is created in 1927 to honor this event.    Fun fact: Ruffino Chianti was reputedly among the wines sold by pharmacists during the Prohibition, said to calm nerves. Just after the Prohibition, in the early 1930s, the Ruffino Orivieto Classico was first released. Into the 1940s, World War II was a mixed blessing for Ruffino. The original Pontassieve Cellars were destroyed in a bomb attack, but this prompted the Folonaris to reconstruct with more up-to-date technology, as well as build and establish new estates and expand their enterprise. In 1947, the first bottlings of the acclaimed Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti Classico Riserva were produced. In the mid-1970s, Ruffino decided to abandon the iconic fiasco, the straw-bottomed bottle, and introduced the more upscale “Florentine” bottle for packaging. The next couple of decades saw several new additions to the portfolio and more worldwide success, overseen by a new generation of the Folonari family, Marco and Paolo. The ubiquitous wine brand is still enjoyed as one of the classic examples of Tuscan wines.  Read less

The 2008 Ruffino Chianti was a bright, but deep ruby. On the nose, there were cedar, ripe cherry, and black pepper aromas, followed by the slightest hint of violets. In the mouth, there were big, Bing cherry flavors, followed by black pepper, rose petals, and tobacco. The Chianti had a high acidity, low tannins, and a light-to-medium body. This is thin, insipid garbage. Has more nose than taste. I have noticed that Ruffino's lower price offerings keep getting worse. I think you have to pay for the Riserva Ducale to get a decent offering from Ruffino.

This wine is very drinkable, which is why it usually makes it into my jug/daily wine stash. This wine isn't as acidic as most sangiovese, nor does it have much tannic bite. A nice inexpensive red for those in the "i don't like reds" crowd. A light colored body and a fruity plum taste lands in my Wednesday night is pizza night club. -Drink it in!

I bought this to have with pappa al pomodoro (a tomato and peasant bread soup). The peppery-ness and intensity matched the food nicely.

Aging in large oak casks brings a fuller, more complex personality to this wine made in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Black cherries, plums and nutty flavors are hallmarks of this medium-bodied red.

An aroma of fresh black cherries, bitter chocolate and hint of tobacco. The palate is medium weight, smooth and silky, with black cherry fruit, medium tannin, and invigorating acidity. Good concentration and complexity.

Aziano has a ruby-red color, with a bouquet of cherry, chocolate and tobacco. It is well-balanced yet complex, displaying ripe fruit with a velvety finish. Vigorous and harmonious, Aziano is ready to drink now and has the potential for short-term aging.

Aziano is produced an Ruffino's Zano Estate, an historic site located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region in the town of Greve. Aziano has aromas of cherry, chocolate and tobacco. Balanced, yet complex, displaying waves of black fruit with a velvety finish. Aziano partners well with veal, lightly spiced pastas and mild cheeses.
