Rudd Proprietary Red Jericho Canyon Vineyard 2000

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

The 2000 Jericho Canyon Vineyard Proprietary Red (a 2,500-case blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot) is atypically full-bodied and powerful for the vintage. While it may not possess the complexity of the 1999, it offers copious quantities of black fruits, licorice, and coffee. The wine is dense and supple, with sweet tannin and a long finish. It should drink well for 12–15 years.

In 1996, food and wine entrepreneur Leslie Rudd realized his 30-year dream of owning a winery in Napa Valley when he purchased a 55-acre estate in Oakville, an appellation recognized for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends. Today the red, rocky soils have been replanted and a stone winery with 22,000 square feet of subterranean caves has been built. This picturesque site is flanked by the renowned vineyards of Dalla Valle, Plumpjack, Harlan Estate's Bond, St. Eden Vineyard, Screaming Eagle, and Phelps Backus. Leslie Rudd hails from Wichita, Kansas. In addition to managing Standard Beverage Corporation, his home state's largest wine and spirits wholesaler, Leslie has forged a career in handcrafted luxury items and fine food, most notably as Chairman of Dean & DeLuca, the upscale nationwide purveyor of specialty foods, housewares and California wines. At Rudd Vineyards & Winery, the vintner has focused his love of fine-tuned artisanal tradition to create the first and only venture bearing his family's name. It will be a lasting legacy for his daughter and for many generations come. A quest for excellence and the financial resources to support it is what makes Rudd Oakville's most exciting up-and-coming winery. To make the best use of the winery's outstanding resources, David Abreu continues to consult as vineyard manager and Patrick Sullivan has joined the Rudd team as winemaker for the upcoming 2008 harvest season. Patrick returns home to the Rudd family after working with Randy Lewis as his winemaker and most recently as associate winemaker at the renowned Paul Hobbs Winery. Patrick shares Leslie’s vision of making the best wine from our Oakville Estate. Beginning with the 2000 vintage, Rudd is producing a cabernet family blend from the re-planted Oakville estate. Rudd also has close ties with a number of small, high-end growers allowing Rudd to produce small quantities of Sauvignon Blanc from the Napa Valley and Chardonnay from the Bacigalupi Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it boasts both an impressive opaque purple color and bouquet of crème de cassis, roasted coffee, melted chocolate, toasty oak, licorice, and creosote. Full-bodied, thick, and rich, with brooding but well-integrated tannin under all the flesh and density, it will undoubtedly firm up (particularly in a cold cellar), and last for 15+ years.

Smooth and valvety, with rich aromas and flavors of toast and cassis that glide elegantly across the palate. The tannins are soft and the acids seem low, making it attractive to drink now.

Exhibiting an opaque black/purple color, the 1999 Jericho Canyon Vineyard boasts a superb perfume of charcoal, creosote, blackberry liqueur, espresso, dried Provençal herbs, licorice, and minerals. Smoke from the toasty new oak also emerges. A superbly dense, full-bodied, exquisite effort, it is a blockbuster, yet incredibly harmonious. It is a winemaking tour de force. One can only imagine when the 45 acres of estate vineyards planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot come into production what might be achieved since this vineyard's neighbors include such luminary sites as Phelps's Backus Vineyard, Dalla Valle, Screaming Eagle, Venge Family Reserve, Plumpjack and Opus One.

Saturated ruby-red. thoroughly ripe aromas of black raspberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, minerals, tar and sexy oak. Sweet, dense and concentrated, with a strong mineral underpinning and excellent grip. Finishes very long and ripe, with big, tongue-dusting tannins. A superb showing.

A ripe, supple-textured wine, loaded with red currant, plum and wild berry flavors, deftly balanced, full-bodied from start to finish, and ending with a long, rich aftertaste. A blend of 53 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 percent Merlot, 17 percent Cabernet Franc and 1 percent Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2010.
