Situated in the tiny village of Sorbo Serpico in Campania's Irpinia region, this highly acclaimed estate was established in 1986. Along with the expert guidance of consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most esteemed winemaking talents, Feudi di San Gregorio has emerged into the international limelight as a great success story in a region that, for many years, was locked in a virtual winemaking holding pattern. Feudi di San Gregorio has aggressively tapped into the enormous potential of Campania's unique terroir and ancient varietals by placing a thoroughly modern spin on indigenous grapes such as Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Aglianico. Feudi di San Gregorio sources its grapes from the finest vineyards set in the rolling hills of the Irpinia region, located in close proximity to Mount Vesuvius. The volcano's legendary eruptions have laden the sandstone and marl soil with mineral-rich deposits of volcanic ash, forming a unique composition that imparts highly distinctive aromas and flavors in the grapes. Recognizing that a keen understanding of climatic conditions is indispensable to the successful cultivation of vines, Feudi di San Gregorio has invested extensively in state-of-the-art winemaking technology. Each of the estate's vineyards is equipped with a solar-powered meteorological station that gathers data continuously. By closely monitoring the environment, the estate is actively practicing eco-compatible viticulture, thereby reducing the need for artificial methods to an absolute minimum. Further embracing the benefits of technology, construction was recently completed on a modernized cellaring facility. A $20-million investment, it has the capacity to house an impressive 5,000 barrels. Read less

Showed power but balanced with old world grace and elegance. Delicious, one of the top wines from the event. Disappointed in the 2003 Serpico which was poured after, the wine showed hot and volatile.

Showed power but balanced with old world grace and elegance. Delicious, one of the top wines from Campania each year. Disappointed in the 2003 Serpico which I tasted after the '05, the wine showed hot and volatile.

Hints of Ponderosa Pine, Agave, and the scent of 19 year old Italian Beaver, this wine drinks well now.

The 2006 Aglianico Rubrato flows from the glass with layers of dark fruit, smoke, tar and sweet toasted oak. It is a pretty, soft-textured red with excellent depth in its fruit. Feudi di San Gregorio, a modern expression of a centuries-old tradition of passion and dedication to the land, is Campania’s premier winemaking estate. This highly-acclaimed winery was established in 1986 and since then, it has aggressively tapped into the enormous potential of Campania's unique terroir and ancient varieties by placing a contemporary spin on indigenous grapes such as Aglianico. The proprietors have pinpointed the region’s finest vineyards and work closely with consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most esteemed winemaking talents to produce wines like this lush, full-bodied Aglianico. Grapes are hand-harvested during the last two weeks of October. After de-stemming and pressing, maceration lasts 20 days. The wine is aged for 8 months in French barriques prior to bottling and release.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 87Rubrato is a distinctive Aglianico with deeply etched mineral tones backed by hard cherry candy, leather, espresso, toast and loads of mineral shadings. The oak tones are present, but well-integrated and the wine boasts polished, silky tannins.Wine Tasting NotesBrilliant ruby red. Intense, rich aroma of red berries and spice. Soft and balanced, with flavors of cherries and strawberries leading into a smooth finish.

The vibrant fruit is beautifully framed by the wines powerful yet well-integrated tannins. The balance with the oak is also superb. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

Wine Spectator ReviewA sturdy, chewy Aglianico, with bright berry fruit, mingled with floral, mineral and sweet tobacco notes. Medium- to full-bodied, with an intense bead of fruit, firm young tannins and a long, ultraclean mineral finish. Slightly less opulent than years past but excellent. Needs time. Best after 2008.Wine Tasting NotesRuby red. Intense, persistent bouquet of rich wild cherries, toasted oak and warm vanilla. Soft, dense and well balanced. The finish is long and pleasant, with flavors of red berries against a smooth background of toast and spice.
