Rubissow-Sargent Merlot Mt. Veeder 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

2003 MERLOT - Night Harvested ACCOLADES & REVIEWS 90 Points - Fine Wine Review "This is a superripe young wine, brimming with cherry, cocoa, tobacco and oak flavors, with a slightly raisiny finish. The tannins are soft and yielding, but there's a good bite of acidity for balance. Drink now." -WINE ENTHUSIAST MAGAZINE APPELLATION Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder - Rubissow Vineyards. Farmed sustainably. PRODUCTION 12/750 ml - 1114 cases WINEMAKER NOTES Ripe and rich with plum and cocoa flavors up front. Raspberries, coffee and mint linger in the finish. A true expression of Merlot terroir. Picked at near-perfect ripeness and late at night to brighten up the fruit. Though immediately (and hedonistically)pleasing to the palate, this wine will age well through 2009. BLEND Merlot 96% Cabernet Sauvignon 4% WINEMAKER Tony Sargent

This longstanding under-the-radar winery in Berkeley is now closed. The NEW Rubissow brand has taken its place and all operations have been moved to Napa Valley, closer to the Rubissow family's Mt. Veeder vineyard estate. Former Physics and Chemistry mad scientist PhDs from UC Berkeley, George Rubissow & Tony Sargent founded Rubissow-Sargent in 1983 with the singular goal of making extraordinary Bordeaux styled wines at a fair price. All the fruit for their wines came form George's 45 acre Mt Veeder estate which he farmed with his two children, Ariel and Peter. The winery's proprietary red, Trompettes gained quick acclaim for its comparison to Bordeaux's famed Cheval Blanc. R-S was the first US winery to grow and produce the South African varietal Pinotage. Just two vintages were made. 1990 and 1991. The winery's classically styled Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Trompettes (65% Cab Franc-35% Merlot) and rarely produced Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon can still be found in the nation's finest restaurant cellars and retailers in ever-dwindling quantities. Restaurants that devotedly carried thw wines from year to year included Le Bernardin, Gramercy Tavern and Craft in NY, Quince in SF, Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Blackbird in Chicago, Campanile in Los Angeles and Sweet Basil in Vail, Colorado. The winery's final vintage was the excellent 2003, resulting in well balanced, medium bodied wines. Carrying the torch forward, the new, next generation RUBISSOW wines are just now showing up in the marketplace and the debut 2004s have been spotted on hot wine lists from Charlie Trotter's in Chicago to Craft in Los Angeles, to Boulevard in San Francisco. Prices are higher, reflecting radically reduced production and greatly increased fruit expression. Rubissow-Sargent wines meanwhile will live on for decades in wine cellars and private collections around the world and will no doubt be discussed for years to come... Read less

Drink it now!!! I couldn't find any information on that particular wine, so I contacted the winery. See below... Dated: Oct 8, 2008 Sandira, Thanks for your inquiry about the Rubissow-Sargent 2001 Merlot. The Rubissow-Sargent brand no longer exists, as my sister and I have renamed our winery Rubissow. The final vintage of R-S was 2003. The 01s were excellent. Assuming the wine has been well stored at a relatively even temp, it should be in good shape. Initially I would expect the wine to taste a bit "tight" when first opened. After a few minutes "breathing" in the glass it will transform to a more delicious version of itself. Expect dry, herbal/floral notes, mint, plum, cherry flavors and good acidity. So, in sum I would say the wine should be at its peak right now! Let me know what you think after you drink it. See my original tasting notes enclosed below. Thank you! Peter Peter Rubissow
