Longstanding Rubissow-Sargent in Berkeley no longer exists. Rubissow - in Napa Valley - is the next generation of the Rubissow-Sargent wine brand. With Tony Sargent's retirement in 2004, second generation brother and sister vintners Ariel and Peter Rubissow bought their father's brand and began a rigorous 4 year process of reinventing it from the ground up. Their goal: to carry on the family winemaking tradition, while making modern, rich, expressive wines of place. Heavy-handed fruit-bomb style was avoided in favor of balanced, delicious wines with exceptional depth, perfume and beauty. After an extensive search, Peter and Ariel hired rising star winemaker TImothy Milos - Cliff Lede, Opus One, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars - as their new accomplice in wine. Next, a new vineyard team was hired to complement Milos' meticulous commitment to quality. Organic farming practices were refined and doubled, yields were radically reduced to improve fruit expression, and freaky levels of soil and vine testing done to ensure proper vine nutrition throught the estate's varied microclimates. Winery practices and aging techniques were refined to improve fruit concentration, aromatic intrigue and tannic balance. Seems like the second generation's risky takeover may be paying off. Their new 2004 wines debuted in summer 2008 to critical acclaim - including "Year's Best Cabernets" accolades from Wine and Spirits Magazine, and "95 Points" from Tasting Panel Magazine.
