Royal Tokaji Furmint 2013

Member Review by puhnner:

Another one from the Jubliation 90's under $20 racks. A beautiful pale, pale gold color. Opens with a bit of muskiness, wind over grass, and wood. Full in the mouth, medium acidity. Medium Dry with a long finish. To me, very similar to an unoaked French Chardonnay and like them, great complexity and acidity. Had alone, but would be great with food. Would not be surprised if this one held up well with more aging. A bargain.

Med gold, slightly viscous, great structure. Honeyed, hazelnutty, peach fuzzy. Everyone should try this once.

A very interesting wine - very reminiscent of a dry version of the sweet Hungarian wines. Strong aromas of stones on the nose. Very dry and steely, but it has a unique intense fruitiness - things like dried sultanas, honey and apricots. Its almost sweet from this fruit. Very interesting.

Don’t be fooled by the price: This may be a fraction of the cost of one of Royal Tokaji’s Aszú wines, but it’s just as carefully made. Sourced from the company’s first-growth vineyards in Mád and Tarcal, this furmint positively glows with flavor, moving from apricot into a red fruit realm, like great riesling sometimes does. The variety’s fiery acidity belts it, drawing attention back to the stony flavor at the wine’s center. Half the blend spent time in oak, an element that grows in impression over the course of several days; put it away for a year to let it better integrate, as it should be worth the wait.

The 2011 Furmint is 50% tank-aged and 50% barrel-aged. Bottled the end of March, it has a pleasant beeswax and jasmine-scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied light with a touch of shaved ginger on the entry, an attractive waxy texture dovetailing into a simple, resinous finish. Fine.

It is not surprising that when they turned their attention to dry wine, their 2006 Furmint would be worthy of wine lovers' attention. Pineapple, lime zest, musky flowers, and wood smoke scent the nose. On the palate, this displays the phenolic cut and refreshing citricity as well as the subtly bitter oiliness common to virtually all Furmint. But there is a satisfying sheer juiciness here that allows the bitter-sweet nutty and zesty side of the variety to add complexity rather than dominate the proceedings. Enjoy this distinctive and intensely-flavored wine over the coming year, particularly in strongly herbal, citric, or charred and grilled food contexts. Royal Tokaji was also long reluctant to bottle nobly sweet wine of less than Tokaji Aszu concentration, even as many of their neighbors were leaning heavily on such "late-harvest" (but not official Aszu) cuvees.

Made from the indigenous Hungarian white variety that is fast gaining popularity with worldwide wine drinkers, this white starts with an intense aromatic nose of nuts and citrus. On the palate, first impressions is of a quite wine, but flavors of lemon, tropical fruit and toast gain momentum. elegant and intriguing, it's a wine with an exotic twist.

Wine & Spirits ReviewFloral and lasting, this is delicious, elegant furmint. It covers octaves of flavor, from bass notes of stones to searing citric sopranos, the middle range filled out with flowers, mint and stone fruit. Clear, clean and invigorating as an aperitif, or with a dish of seared scallops.Wine Tasting NotesFurmint is a white varietal grown in Hungary and is the main ingredient of Tokaji Asz. This yellowish-green grape displays a bouquet reminiscent of ripe apples in youth. After aging in wood, Furmint develops aromas of honey and walnuts. Rich in extract, it makes a heady, robust wine with pronounced acid. It is an early-budding, late-ripening variety and is particularly susceptible to botrytis. Often characterized by its high alcohol levels, Furmints high acidity gives the wine longevity. The Royal Tokaji Furmint is a dry, white wine with apricot, ripe apple and a hint of honey on the nose. Well-balanced with a nice mineral backbone, this clear, light-colored wine displays flavors of apples and fruit with just a touch of lemon zest.
