Roy Estate Napa Valley Red 2006
94 points Robert Parker: Roy's biggest production wine (approximately 1,500 cases) is their proprietary blend. The 2006 Proprietary Red is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. It possesses elegant, roasted herb, chocolate, espresso, and black currant aromas, delicious fruit, and a long, muscular, concentrated personality. Obviously built for the long haul, it is approachable, but should hit its peak in 7-8 years, and last for 20-25. This 17-acre Soda Canyon site originally planted by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer has tight 3 x 6 spacing, and produces two wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon and an estate proprietary blend. Proprietors Shirley and Charles Roy have demonstrated courage as well as passion in attempting to craft some of the finest wines to emerge from this area of Napa. Production is slightly over 2,500 cases in an abundant vintage, and winemaker Philippe Melka brings a French savoir-faire to Napa Valley's gorgeous fruit. (Dec 2008)
The Soda Canyon vineyards were planned by Helen Turley and John Pina. It's easy to call them 'perfect' from a vineyard management stand point. The wine has been made by Philippe Melka who undeniably has a gift with California wines by allowing their opulence to shine while offering the perfect balance in French Oak. The result at Roy Estate was 95pts from Parker; and for once a great wine that will continue to be great for many years to come.
Both the Roy Estate Blend and the Cab are gorgeous wines; full bodied yet elegant; with the lowest alcohol levels in this cult wine category! It drinks amazingly well out of the bottle---better to decant---but according to Parker, will continue to be great for the next 15 years! One of my faves....

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 95This 17-acre vineyard on the eastern side of Napa is owned by Charles and Shirley Roy. Located in what is known as the Soda Canyon area, the vineyard was planted under the direction of Helen Turley, but todays winemaker is Philippe Melka. They have two wines in their cuvee, a Bordeaux blend and, of course, their Cabernet Sauvignon. My favorite of the quartet of wines I tasted is the 2005 Proprietary Red, a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 7% Petite Verdot (1,500 cases produced). Of course, Soda Canyon is a southern Napa region and cool, much like its neighbor Stags Leap. This wine exhibits very Bordeaux-like notes of black currants, chocolate, underbrush, and some background oak. With beautiful sweet fruit, striking elegance, well-integrated acidity, and a dense ruby/purple color and medium to full body, this will be a long-lived wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.Wine Tasting NotesFull of life and energy, the wine is intense; it expresses ripe flavors of black currant, Asian spices, earthy characters, mocha and ripe cherry. Lush and rich in the attack, the wine carries on with amazing purity and depth finishing with powerful soft tannins and aromas of white chocolate and licorice. The wine changes constantly in the glass bringing more nuances and excitement each time. This is a superb expression of great Cabernet from Soda Canyon just south of Stags Leap District in Napa Valley.
