Roumier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 1988

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): I am a big fan of the regular Roumier bottling of Bonnes-Mares in 1988 (as opposed to the Vieilles Vignes bottling that was also produced in this vintage). While the wine is still on the young side for primetime drinking, it is clearly one of the top wines of the vintage, as the wine continues to exude freshness and balance, with none of the (momentary?) sinewy aspects apparent here at all that show through today in so many other 1988s. The nose is classic Bonnes-Mares, offering up notes of black cherries, plums, venison, heather, sous bois, vinesmoke, mustard, earth and a vague topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, balanced and clearly delineated, with moderate tannins, a fine core of fruit, and good length and grip on the maturing, but still young finish. This will be superb, but I would still give it a few more years to fully blossom. 2008-2030. (Mar/Apr 2006)
