Rotenberg Merlot Ceptura 2007
We are a "boutique" winery in Ceptura - Dealu Mare, Romania. Our 2006 Merlot has been voted "The best Merlot in Romania" We cultivate our own 30 year-old vineyards reducing yealds to increase grape quality. The winery is gravitational and the wine is not "agressed" mechanically by pumps. Aging is performed in new oak barriques.
This is a luscious merlot, and i really enjoyed it, even though I'm not a big merlot fan. It was fruity yet dry, deep and complex -- almost like a mourvedre (which is one of my favorites). I bought it in Bucharest for 45 lei (about $15), at the recommendation of the shop keeper in what must be the only high-end wine shop in town; he recommended it over a wine at twice the price, so expected it to be very good, and it was!!
This wine is a bit of a find, really. Cramele Rotenberg is a small, young and ambitious winery in Ceptura, Dealu Mare, and this is their flagship wine. Powerful yet velvety, aged for 18 months in new oak but not overpoweringly barriquey, it's as good as Merlot could possibly get in Romania.
This wine tastes complex but with character. Quite fruity, but not overly fruity, it just is a splendid bottle of wine. I would agree with Larry Chaset review in that it is dry, but maybe that makes it reassuringly Romanian. My son got it for me while he was on a music tour of Romania with his school for abouit 68 lei (about £16) and I give him top marks for his choice!
Probably the best Romanian Merlot. Aging will do wonders.
Voted in 2009 "the best Merlot in Romania" and the second best Romanian wine with 86 points
