Rosso di Toscana I Piaggioni Montalcino Mocali 2007
RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
I am one for unusual pairings... that being said, I decided to break with tradition and before dining, I had this wine with some fresh, ripe cherries that I just happened to have on hand. Wow! Not only did they compliment the Sangio, but it brought the flavor out of the fruit. (Don't ask me how.. think strawberries and champagne) The wine was light enough to not overpower and still had enough fruit to light up my nose. We will be keeping this one around.
Great value. Soft, fruity, simple but with a personality!

While "Baby Brunellos" of this quality usually sell for much more, all the wines of the Mocali estate are truly amazing values. The Ciacci family owns this excellent property southwest of the town of Montalcino. The Rosso is entirely Sangiovese Grosso and is matured for around 11 months in large casks. To say the 2007 overdelivers is an understatement- it offers a wonderfully nuanced aroma of red fruits carefully married to subtle oak and the palate is supple, lasting and accessible.
