Lovely, drinkable red. Deep garnet in color, tending towards inky purple. Spicy cedar and a touch of pepper in the aromas, then sweet plum and raspberry on the palate with a touch more peppery spice in the finish. Medium bodied, with a silky texture. Just enough acid to make it an easy pairing with a wide range of foods, from burgers and roast chicken to pasta and pizza. Wish I'd bought more.

Appellation: Lodi Vineyards: Abba Vineyard Grower: Phil Abba Composition: 100% Syrah Alcohol: 14.9% pH: 3.66 Total Acidity: 0.68g/100ml% Barrels: 90% French, 10% American oak Vineyard This decade-old vineyard is located north and west of Lodi. The terrain is gently sloping with gravely loam soil. An innovative grower, Phil Abba, is one of the few viticulturists in the Lodi area to use vertical trellising and leaf pulling to get the all-important sunshine dancing on the fruit. The result is small, thick-skinned clusters of the Estrella River/Chapoutier clone that produces very exotic, dark, lush wines. Vineyard production is about three-tons-per acre. Cellar Practices and Winemaking These grapes were hand harvested and crushed into a small stainless steel tank and given a three-day cold soak before being warmed and inoculated with specially selected yeasts including a Rockpile strain isolated by Rosenblum. A fairly fast and hot fermentation ensued, and the wine was pressed nearly two weeks later. It was racked into French and American oak barrels. To add character and nuance, this wine benefited from Rosenblum Cellars’ cutting edge barrel program, as oak barrels from eight coppers were employed with an emphasis on medium + toast casks from Seguin-Moreau. Winemaker Comments This wine is a great example of Syrah finding another hot-climate home. Exuberant and rich aromatics and mouthfeel highlight the blackberry and chocolate aspects of this enticing wine. This wine can handle the bold flavors of veal saltimbocca, or a hearty rabbit stew.
