Rose de la Riviere Fronsac 2010
This rose from Fronsac comes from an estate steeped in history. Chateau de la Riviere was built in 1553 by Gaston de l‘Isle, the mayor of Bordeaux, and today, it is the largest estate in Fronsac. Medium-bodied flavors of cassis and dark berries from the cabernet and some nice hints of smokey chocolate from the merlot.
Chalky and minerally aromas mixed with tart blackberry. Subtle yet distinguishable fruit flavors of blackberry, minerals, and chalk, with a springy acidity. Nice and smooth after aeration.
I'm not usually a merlot man and this Fronsac really hot the spot. A delightful surprise from a less documented Bordeaux appellation. The notes from the cab grapes really balancing out merlot's silky "hollowness." The Telegraph gave the winery itself a shout out in http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/wine/9548898/Fronsac-the-bridesmaid-of-Bordeaux-wines.html
As it stands today (September 26, 2009), the tannins in this wine greatly diminish any drinking pleasure. But though closed for business, there is promise for the future. The menthol, notes of sour cherry and green acidity which predominate now should open up to something a bit more soft and graceful in 2 to 3 years. Otherwise, be sure to accompany with food.
We loved this wine. Very memorable. We served it with a rib roast of beef and yorkshire pudding. Beautiful color and very smooth.
Had this with some easter lamb at a party. Enjoyed it very much, and it certainly beat the other wines at the table. However I was surprised to find out that it was valued at $70. It was good, but it wasn't that outstanding a Bordeaux to me. Bottle variation maybe?
Full-bodied rich wine with tones of black berry and cassis and dandelion. Earthy. There is nothing subtle about this wine with a rich dark red inky in color, almost black. It most definitely aged well.
$12.99 at Trader Joes, it was the best VALUE we have ever purchased there. sadly, i bought the only case they received and no one knew anything about additional shipments of the wince.
