Rompicollo Poggio Al Tufo. Tommasi 2015

Member Review by EMark:

Some cherry and stone fruit on entry. Not a particularly complex wine, although, I have to admit it is a relatively easy wine to drink. I guess that even though nothing stands out as being great about this wine, nothing really detracts from it either. On the other hand, for less than $12, I can’t be disappointed.

#31 on Wine Spectator Top 100 For 2014!! The Tommasi family has long been recognized as one of the best producers of Amarone and Valpoicella wines. In 1997 they purchased vineyard land in the Alta Maremma at about 1,000 feet above sea level with tufo soil, rich in volcanic rock. Here the Sangiovese and Cabernet ripen slowly as the altitude and the Mediterranean temper the warm sunlight and the vines dig deep for moisture. This blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a single-vineyard site called Rompicollo, which benefits from a Southern exposure. The vines here are densely planted (6,500 vines per hectare) in order to yield the best quality fruit. The wine undergoes a 10-day fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months in Slavonian oak casks. The Wine Spectator selected it as a Top wine of the year. They scored it 92 points saying "Presents a whiff of blackberry, bacon and ink, followed by dark berry, black pepper and spice notes. Rich and supple, with ample structure for support and a long, fruit-, spice- and mineral-filled aftertaste. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2015 through 2022." Limited!
